Ian Madsen and his KCP Racing team capped off a very strong 2014 season at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night as Madsen earned his first Knoxville Raceway Championship as he picked up a fourth place finish during the season finale event on Saturday night.
“It is awesome to win this deal,” Madsen said. “I can’t thank Bret Nehring, and everyone involved with this team for the efforts they have put forward over the last two seasons. We built this thing up with the goal of winning a Knoxville Championship, and it feels great to pull it off.”
With 28 cars on hand for the season finale at the ‘Mecca of Mud’, Madsen kicked his night off by timing his Nehring Construction/Team Kline Electric/Logan Contractors Supply entry in fourth fastest.
Finishing sixth in his heat race, Madsen would earn the transfer into the feature event, as he lined up for the 25 lap feature in the fifth spot.
Heading into the main event with a 65 point lead over second place Justin Henderson, and 91 points over third place Tery McCarl, Madsen was mindful not to pus any limits, as he was cautions in the race, though there were some tense moments.
Over the duration of the race, a car got sideways in front of Madsen, and Ian made a move to avoid the near disaster. Racing with Dusty Zomer for the third spot, Madsen made a couple of advances for the spot, until one attempt nearly brought the two drivers together, and Madsen opted to back off.
With two laps to go, Madsen’s left sideboard buckled, and he was able to hang on to a fourth place finish despite the minor issue.
“I am just speechless,” he would go on to say. “I can’t wait to celebrate with my team. This is just a great accomplishment for all involved.”
