Abbottstown, PA — (August 30, 2014) — Brian Montieth used lapped traffic to his advantage to grab the race lead and move into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time Lincoln win list after scoring his 43rd career win on John Gleim Excavating Night in the Pigeon Hills Saturday night.
Handicapping placed the Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator 11th for the start. Outside front row starter Ryan Wilson led the first lap before a red flag for a flipping Freddie Rahmer on the back stretch stopped the action. The rest of the 25-lap feature went non-stop.
Wilson led the first 14 laps before sixth-starting Steve Owings took over. Montieth, putting on his normal driving clinic, advanced to third by lap nine and followed Owings past Wilson into second on the same lap. Montieth continued to dog the leader until the two hit lapped traffic, driving under Owings in turns one and two of lap 21.
Once in front, Montieth drove through heavy lapped traffic to his third Lincoln win of the year.
“Fred Putney did an awesome job here,” said Montieth in victory lane, “We had almost 100 cars here and the track was still raceable. That’s really unheard of here in Central Pennsylvania. He does an excellent job week-in and week-out trying to do everything he can so we’re competitive as a race group. He’s definitely one of the best.”
“It is tough here every week,” continued Montieth, “It doesn’t matter where you start. You can start front row, or start 20th, and everybody’s got a chance to win. That’s why I think that Kasey Kahne race is going to be a good deal. You don’t need a ton of motor and anybody can win here from any point, so I think it’s going to be a good show. Short track racing is the best.”
“I want to congratulate the Krimes family,” said Montieth, “They absolutely deserve the track title. He finished second in points a couple of times and I’m sure happy for them. The run he had tonight show why he’s the track champion.”
By taking a green in warm-ups, Krimes claimed his first-ever Lawrence Chevrolet track title. And he did it in style, coming from 19th starting spot to finish fifth.
Owings and Wilson crossed second and third, followed by eighth-starting Cory Haas.
Sixth through tenth were Matt Boland, Billy Dietrich, Jim Siegel, Danny Dietrich, and Robbie Kendall.
Heats for the 27 “410” Sprints were won by Kyle Moody, Montieth, and Danny Dietrich, with Krimes winning the consolation.
Chandler Leiby, grandson of Lincoln co-promoter Bob Leiby and whose family is close friends with race sponsor John Gleim, came from eighth starting spot to claim his first win of the year in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature. It was Leiby’s second career Lincoln win.
Outside front row starter Denny Gross led the first seven laps before giving way to C.J. Tracy. Leiby was up to third by the end of the third lap, and took the lead from Tracy on lap 12. Following a lengthy red flag when two cars got hooked together in turn two of lap 13, Leiby held off Kevin Nouse, C.J. Tracy, Niki Young, and points leader Chase Dietz over the final seven laps.
Heats for the 31 “358” Sprints were won by Matt Campbell, Nouse, and Doug Hammaker, with Zach Euculano winning the consolation.
Russ Mitten started on the outside of the front row and led every lap of the 25-lap super sportsman feature.
Scott Geesey advanced from fourth to second on the first lap and drove on the back bumper of Mitten the entire way, with sixth-starting Frankie Herr, Mike Enders, and hard charger Kevin Nouse (who came from 11th starting spot) rounding out the top five.
Mitten’s final margin of victory in the first of three straight appearances by the super sportsman leading up to the Lawrence Chevrolet Sportsman 100 on September 13th was .81 seconds.
Heats for the 37 Super Sportsman won by Herr, Mitten, Nouse, and Rich Eichelberger, with Steve Wilbur and Chad Trout winning twin consolations.
Lincoln swings back in action next Saturday night, September 6th, at 7 PM with the Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprinters competing in their final point race of 2014. The Super Sportsman and PASS RaceSaver (305) Sprints will round out the 3-division open-wheeled program. Gates will open at 5 PM.
