– KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 4, 2015) – Jamie Ball returned to Victory Lane last weekend during Sprint Invaders competition, which gives his White Lightning Motorsports team a jolt of momentum entering the 25th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals this week.
“It was a confidence booster and good momentum for us going into the 360 Knoxville Nationals,” he said. “I’d say our goal is to make the A Main on Saturday through our qualifying night. Last year we did that and we started 15th. If we could do a little better than that it’d be great.”
Ball, whose preliminary night for the marquee event at Knoxville Raceway is this Thursday, is primed thanks to another solid outing with the Sprint Invaders last Thursday at Dubuque County Fair in Dubuque, Iowa.
Ball finished fourth in his first heat race and second in the second heat to earn a spot in the dash. He was beat to the line for fourth place in the dash by a nose, which was a blessing in disguise. The feature inversion placed Ball on the pole for the 30-lap feature.
“I had a good start and had been working all night to get the bottom to work for me,” he said. “I raced with Harold Pohren for about 10 laps. I got enough to take the top away. Then about halfway through I saw John Schultz coming on the bottom lane so I hurried up and got back down to the bottom lane.”
After taking the lead approximately a third of the way through the main event Ball led the remainder of the feature to register his second victory of the season.
“Those were my smartest and most patient laps that I’ve ran,” he said. “It’s a good time to be hitting our stride.”
Last weekend concluded on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, where Ball qualified 21st quickest.
“Qualifying at Knoxville is so important,” he said. “I just made two bad laps and didn’t have everything crisp on the engine. It put us behind the eight ball come feature time.”
Ball won his heat race from the pole position, which lined him up on the outside of the ninth row for the main event.
“Track position and starting position is so important,” he said. “It’s pretty tough having to start 18th. I fell back a little at the start. Then I had some trouble getting by some guys running the top and bottom in front of me. My car was good and the track was good. I just wasn’t able to make up a lot of ground.”
Ball ended with a 15th-place result.
