FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 14, 2015) – Seth Bergman added another bullet point to his résumé on Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.
Bergman, who is having a career-best season, captured his 13th victory of the season and fourth with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour as he repeated a trip to Victory Lane during the Portacool U.S. National Dirt Track Championship.
“I put a lot of pride into winning races,” he said. “I have big goals that we work toward. Along the way you notch these things off and that was another notch. Where it’s at, the venue, it’s neat for sure. It’s nice to win at a facility like that and in front of a big crowd.”
Bergman was on point throughout the night in front of a crowd estimated at more than 10,000 people. He kicked off the night by powering from sixth to win a heat race, which gave him the most points and a spot in the feature redraw.
“We were fast all night from the second we unloaded,” he said. “We were very confident that we were the guy to beat. The surface in the heat race was almost perfect to be able to capitalize on a bad draw. I told myself I needed to get to second to make the redraw. When I got to second in no time I realized we had a good shot at winning the heat.”
Bergman then pulled the No. 2 during the random redraw, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for the 40-lap main event.
“I was confident we would have a good shot at winning, but you can never overlook your competitors and the ever-changing track conditions,” he said. “I was paying attention to all the little details. It was tough. Sometimes winning a race from the front row is not easy, especially when the track is changing and taking rubber. I tried to stay smart and keep up with the race track.”
Bergman took the lead on the first lap and he stayed out front for the first 20 laps. However, as the track began to take rubber and Bergman was mired in traffic, two competitors passed him on Lap 21.
“We got to traffic and those guys found a better part of the track than I did,” he said. “Up until that I was conserving tires and trying to drive a smart race. I wanted to stay out front, but at the same time not use my equipment. At that point I knew I had to go. Once I got passed for the lead I had to get everything out of the race car.”
Bergman regained the lead on Lap 27 and he promptly began to pull away. However, a late-race caution bunched the field together with four laps remaining. Bergman maintained the top spot and he used the clean air to win by more than three seconds.
“I actually ran out of fuel coming to the checkered flag,” he said. “The tires probably didn’t have two or three laps left in them. It was close at the end.”
Bergman became only the fourth driver – along with Danny Lasoski, Steve Kinser and Jason Johnson – to claim multiple sprint car wins at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.
He returns to Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition this Friday and Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Casey’s General Store Midwest Fall Brawl IV.
