NEW CASTLE, Ind.—November 18, 2015— Tracy Hines will close a big chapter on his career this week as he competes for the final time as a full-time Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series competitor in the historic Western World Championships in Arizona. The 2002 Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series champion is the third-winning driver in series history and has had a storied career with the series, dating back nearly 20 years.
The 48th Western World Championships for the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona, are set for Thursday, November 19, Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21. A full racing program is set for each night.
“Tucson is a track I’ve done well at in the past, so having the Western World back there is a plus for us,” said Hines, who drives the Carolina Nut Company DRC. “It’s the biggest sprint car event in Arizona and has bounced around from track to track the last few years, so hopefully they can keep it in Tucson and continue to build on the amazing history of the event. It certainly was special for me to add my name to the list of winners a few years ago.”
Hines won both nights of the non-wing sprint car portion of the Western World Championships at USA Raceway in 2011, when they event was sanctioned by the former ASCS Canyon Region. The Indiana native raced for the first time at the three-eighths-mile when the track hosted all three USAC National divisions as part of the Copper on Dirt event in 2010. He finished third in the Honda USAC National Midget Series race and was fifth with the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series in that tripleheader.
“Tucson (USA Raceway) is a very racy track,” he noted. “We have good notes to go off there, since we’ve run there a few times and run all three types of USAC car there. The local drivers know that place pretty well, so they’ll add to the competition even more. The field of travelers we have right now is one of the toughest ever. We have three more shots to get a win and that is our sole focus this week.”
Hines was victorious on the opening night of the Midget portion of the Western World Championship last season, when the event was held at Canyon Speedway Park and sanctioned by the Honda USAC National Midget Series.
Last week in the Budweiser Oval Nationals Presented by All Coast Construction at Perris Auto Speedway in California for the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series, Hines picked up a pair of top-five finishes. He was fourth on the second night, Friday, November 13, and finished fourth in the finale as well, on Saturday, November 14. The veteran driver opened the Oval Nationals with an 11th-place finish on Thursday, November 12.
“We were just a little off the first night and made up for it on the next two nights,” said Hines of his Oval Nationals performance. “Getting locked in for Saturday, after Friday’s race was very important. With the huge field of cars, you didn’t want to have to time trial again and go through a heat race, if you didn’t have to. We put ourselves in a good position and capitalized on a few of those in front of us having some trouble in the feature, and all in all, the final two nights were pretty good.”
Hines enters the Western World Championships this week, ninth in points with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series. He has 21 top-10 finishes, with 10 of those being top-five showings, as he chases his first win of the season.
All three nights of the Western World Championships at USA Raceway in Tucson, Arizona will be broadcast online, via pay-per-view on www.thecushion.com.
