Oswego, NY –(December 17, 2015) — Oswego Speedway officials have announced their 66th annual, 14-race weekend schedule featuring the Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS ‘Road to the Championship’, as well as the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Race of Champions Modified 250, and the second annual Port City ‘Super Spectacle.’
When taking note of the 2016 schedule, several key components will celebrate landmark anniversary celebrations this season.
First introduced in 1992, the Pathfinder Bank Small Block Supermodified division will embark on its 25th consecutive season of competition at the ‘Steel Palace’ this year and as a result will also see the 25th running of both the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS championship as well as the Small Block Supermodified Classic.
The 25th SBS Classic will of course take place during the 60th anniversary celebration of Budweiser Classic Weekend featuring the 60th running of the International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds and highlighted by the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
The month of July will see the return of the $10,000 Mr. Novelis Supermodified, celebrating its 30th title event, which will return to a 50-lap format in 2016.
The Speedway will officially open its gates for racing on Saturday, May 14 with a three division show featuring kick-off events for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS as well as the 61-lap Richie Evans Memorial for the Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds.
In a bit of a throwback, the Speedway will return to action the very next weekend with ‘Road to the Championship’ events for the Supermodifieds and SBS on May 21, before welcoming the first visit of the season for the ISMA Supermodifieds on Memorial Day Weekend.
Saturday, May 28 will feature the Port City 160 ‘Super Spectacle’ for the second consecutive year, capping a three week stretch of action in the month of May.
The Novelis Supermodified Jim Shampine Memorial 75, the ISMA Supermodified Jack Murphy Memorial 50, and the Pathfinder Bank SBS Tony White Memorial 35 will once again provide the only time all season that open-wheel fans can see all three divisions on the same night, at the same Speedway.
A rain date of Sunday, May 29 will be implemented for the weekend.
Saturday, June 4 will serve as an off-weekend for the Speedway as well as a rain date for events in May.
Racing in the month of June is scheduled to begin on June 11 with the Spring Championship, followed on June 18 by the Novelis Supermodified Twin 35’s and driver autograph night.
For the first time in several years, the June 11 racing program will see coolers allowed into the rear grandstand only. More details and specifics on cooler regulations for this evening will be released in the coming weeks.
After taking a weekend off for high school graduation, the fast paced month of July gets underway on Saturday, July 2.
The Independence Weekend Grand Prix will open the month of July with 75-lap and 35-lap long distance events for the Supermodifieds and SBS, along with the Speedway’s popular Fourth of July Fireworks display.
The ISMA Supermodifieds return for the second time in 2016 on Saturday, July 9 for King of Wings VIII, once again joined by the Pathfinder Bank SBS.
The Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS will once again provide a one-two punch during the Summer Championship on Saturday, July 16 before returning together to celebrate the 30th running of the $10,000 to win Mr. Novelis Supermodified and the 25th running of the $1,500 to win Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS on Saturday, July 23.
This late July date, prior to the running of the Sandusky Speedway Hy-Miler Nationals, was the long-time home of the Mr. title events, which will make its return in ’16 along with a 50-lap Mr. Super main to join the 35-lap Mr. SBS event.
A three week stretch in the month of August will be the ultimate swing in deciding the 2016 track champions at Oswego Speedway.
The stretch will begin with Retro Night at the Speedway on Saturday, August 6 which will once again see the return of Semi-Finals and a 45-lap feature for the Novelis Supermodifieds.
The Pathfinder Bank SBS will then take center stage on Saturday, August 13 with Twin 20 feature events.
For the first time since 2012, the regular season championship will conclude with Speedway champions being declared during Track Championship Night on Saturday, August 20, prior to Classic Weekend.
The 60th anniversary celebration of Budweiser International Classic Weekend will again be a week-long line of festivities running from August 27 – September 4.
Reserved Classic test sessions will take place daily on track along with the annual Racing Rolling Classic Bowling at Lighthouse Lanes on Wednesday, August 31 and the 10th annual Oswego Kartway Classic on Thursday, September 1.
Competition will open for Classic Weekend on Friday, September 2 with open practice for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS as well as ‘Fast Friday’ time trial sessions for Supermodifieds and SBS. On track action will conclude Friday evening with SBS heat races.
In another traditional return, by 7:30 p.m. on Friday the Speedway’s infield gates will open for the ‘Party in the Pits’ featuring live music, driver autograph sessions, the Supermodified simulators, as well as a pit stop competition for fans.
Classic Weekend’s ‘Super Saturday’ on September 3 will be a can’t-miss two division blockbuster seeing the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, in a 150-lap contest, as well as the ISMA Supermodified Super Nationals 60 championship.
‘Classic Sunday’ on September 4 will not only feature the historic 60th running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds, it will also be paired with the 25th running of the Bud Light SBS Classic 75 – filling out a full day of competition beginning at 11:30 a.m., culminating with the International Classic green flag coming no later than 4:30 p.m.
Just two weeks following Classic Weekend, Race of Champions Weekend will return to the Speedway after a one year absence.
The historic three day event will return September 15-17 with an open practice slated for Thursday, September 15.
Currently as announced by the Race of Champions, the RoC Sportsman 100 will be the highlight of the Friday, September 16 program with the RoC Modified 250 being featured on Saturday, September 17.
