Opening 2016 up in his native Australia, Kerry Madsen quickly found victory lane as he took the checkered flag aboard his Keneric Racing/American Racing No. 29 machine at the Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane, AU during the Piston Cup.
“It was a great night for our team, and I am happy we could grab a win so early in our Australian campaign,” said Kerry Madsen.
Checking in at the Archerfield Speedway after Mother Nature hampered his trip to Sydney, AU, Madsen showed great speed early in the night as he timed the American Racing Custom Wheels backed entry in third fastest amongst the 33 drivers in the pit area.
Racing from seventh to fifth during his first heat race, ‘The Mad Man’ would finish fourth in his second heat after again starting in the seventh position.
Finding himself sitting third in points after qualifying events, the St. Marys, NSW native turned Knoxville, IA resident would finish third in the shootout and grid the field from the second row for the 35-lap A Main event.
As the race went green, Madsen settled into the third spot as he chased after the lead duo of Brooke Tatnell, and Andrew Scheuerle. With the race clicking off at a torrid pace, Madsen continued to run in the third spot as he searched for an opening.
With the non-stop racing drawing to a close, Madsen would pressure the two leaders and bring the crowd to their feet. Making a move with less than five laps to go, the leaders would go three-wide, and Madsen would surge into the top spot to much of the crowd’s delight.
Holding the top spot once out in front, Madsen would take the checkered flag for the first time in 2016.
“That was an incredible race,” Madsen added. “To go non-stop like we did and make a move with just a couple laps left in the race was a blast. My guys have been working hard since we got here, and I am really thankful for the Gavranich Family and the American Racing Custom Wheels staff for making this all possible.”
