California, MO — (May 8, 2016) — With rain around the Central Missouri area, things looked doubtful, but the owners and personnel at Double-X Speedway were determined to put on a show for the fans that came out to celebrate Mother’s Day, a family tradition on Sunday nights for 27 seasons. With a competitive field of cars on hand a fast track awaited the drivers on hand. It looked that repeat winners would be the order of the evening.
Fans were eagerly awaiting the feature event in the Winged Sprint Cars with Pocohontas,IL driver Zach Daum starting alongside perennial front runner Jonathan Cornell. With opening night victor Tyler Thomas starting in row two, the feature pace would be fast around the quarter mile oval. At the drop of the green flag, Cornell took the point with Daum and Thomas in chase. Through a series of early caution flags the running order remained the same. Cornell maintained his lead opening up 2 to 3 car lengths on second place Daum. On lap 15 the caution came out as Daum slowed in turn two and stopped on the back stretch, only to retire to the pit area with mechanical woes. On the restart Tyler Thomas was on Cornell’s rear bumper but the shoe from Sedalia wad not to be caught as Cornell was not to be denied. Thomas brought his 86 machine home second, California’s Tyler Blank came home a solid third, Corey Nelson was fourth and Broc Elliott rounded out the top five.
