ABBOTTSTOWN, PA 5/28/2016 – “Hero or zero, Baby!”
So exclaimed Brian Montieth in summarizing his twelfth-to-first run in a thrilling $5,000-to-win Hilly Rife Memorial non-stop 30 lap feature event at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
It was a run that saw Montieth advance from fifth to first over the final five laps.
He passed both Billy Dietrich and Jim Siegel on lap 27 to move into third, caught Cory Haas for second on lap 29, and drove around Glenndon Forsythe on the final turn to claim his 52nd career Lincoln win.
In the end, the race took just 8 minutes, 18.723 seconds, and the top three crossed the finish line just .777 seconds apart.
“Absolutely not. I had no idea,” reacted Montieth when asked if he knew where he was in the running order over the final laps, “I was trying to look at the board and make sure no one went to the top on me. I thought Glenndon was definitely going to the top on turns one and two of the last lap. I was better than him in one and two, but everyone was just holding their own in three and four.
“It just came alive toward the end,” continued Montieth, “At the beginning of the race, we struggled, and I thought we were just going to run around the rubber. That’s not me. Luckily, the top came in and I finally felt comfortable in the car. Here we stand.”
A disappointed Forsythe, who took the lead from Chad Trout on lap 19, crossed second, with Haas third.
Completing the top five were Billy Dietrich and Siegel. Sixth through tenth were Robbie Kendall, Alan Krimes, polesitter Chad Trout (who grabbed the lead on a second attempt to start the race and led the first 18 laps), Austin Hogue, and front row starter Frankie Herr.
Heats for the 28 410 sprinters were won by Montieth, Herr, and Haas, with Brandon Rahmer winning the consolation.
York’s C.J. Tracy claimed his first career win in the 20-lap 358 sprint car feature. Tracy started on the pole and was the class of the field. A last-lap spin by fifth-place Ryan Higgins set up the final lap restart, but it was to no avail, with Tracy crossing .75 seconds ahead of fellow front-row starter Mike Bittinger.
Chandler Leiby, Jeff Rohrbaugh, and Jeff Halligan completed the top five.
Heats for the 30 358 sprinters were won by Tyler Esh, Halligan, and Matt Campbell, with Chris Frank winning the consolation.
A wild, caution-filled 20-lap Central PA Legends feature saw York’s Lucas Montgomery score his fifth Lincoln career win. Despite several lead changes within laps, there were five official lead changes during the race. Between laps 13 and 16, there was a different leader each lap.
Bill Diehl led the first 12 laps, before things got interesting, with Harlon Leppo leading lap 13, Mason Chaney leading lap 14, Diehl back in front on lap 15, and Montgomery taking the lead for good on lap 16.
Second through fifth were Leppo, Diehl, Travis Perry, and Justice Forbes.
Heats for the 27 Central PA Legends were won by Chaney, Leppo, and Chad Earnst.
Next Saturday night, June 4th, at 7:30 PM, it will be APPLE CHRYSLER/DODGE/JEEP/RAM OF HANOVER NIGHT and York County Racing Club Night featuring the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints, and 358 Late Models. Gates open at 5:30 PM.
