While the NCRA forces battle it out for the $10K winner’s share during the two-day affair on Friday and Saturday, July 1-2, the 305-ci URSS vs. Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Cars mix it up for a $2,000 winner’s cut. The Colorado Lightning Sprints will be in action as well on both nights with upwards off 100 Sprint Cars expected to fill the DCRP pit area to kick off the Fourth of July weekend.
Among those leading the way into the “Boothill Showdown” are defending Steve King Memorial winner Tony Bruce, Jr., and Don Droud, Jr., who bested the NCRA forces earlier this season at DCRP.
Liberal native Bruce, Jr., who will be piloting Danny King’s No. 88 entry, outdueled 2014 Steve King Memorial winner C.J. Johnson to top last year’s event atop the 3/8-mile DCRP clay oval.
Driving the Ochs Brothers No. 1x entry that Bruce, Jr., drove to victory lane last year, Lincoln, Nebraska’s Don Droud, Jr., has been difficult to handle on the NCRA trail this season with a dominant May 7 triumph at DCRP among his three series wins thus far.
In the 305-ci URSS vs. DCRP Sprint Car ranks, Luke Cranston and Taylor Velasquez lead the way into the event.
Cranston, the reigning DCRP Sprint Car champion and current URSS Kansas points leader, will be gunning for a second consecutive Steve King Memorial triumph after wiring the field in last year’s edition. Cranston comes off his first DCRP win of the year this past weekend.
While Ness City’s Cranston leads URSS Kansas Region points, it’s Turpin, Oklahoma’s Taylor Velasquez atop this season’s Precise Racing Products DCRP Sprint Car points on the strength of two victories. Velasquez leads Cranston by just 11 points in the track title chase.
Along with the $10,000 winner’s share, Saturday’s NCRA feature offers up $500 to start, $1,200 for tenth and $2,500 for fifth. The Boothill Showdown’s Steve King Memorial is in memory of the popular Jetmore, KS, racer that lost his life in a 2006 Knoxville Nationals crash. The Steve King Foundation was established after his passing to assist members of the racing family in times of need. Tickets to the Boothill Showdown featuring the Steve King Memorial on July 1-2 are just $25 for adults each night with children 11 and under free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes are $30 each night.
