By John Rittenoure – MEEKER, Okla. (June 24, 2022) – A final turn bobble turned costly for Danny Wood and handed victory to Tanner Conn in Friday’s AmeriFlex / OCRS IMCA Sprint Car main event at Red Dirt Raceway.
It was Conn’s second straight Mike Peters Freedom 40 Classic victory and third in four years.
The 5th annual Peters Freedom 40 Classic main event got underway with Ty Williams jumping into the early lead with veteran Danny Wood right behind until he drove around Williams for the lead on lap 11. Meanwhile seventh starting Tanner Conn was moving toward the front and passed Williams for second. On lap 26 Conn threw a slider on Wood in turns 3-4 but slide high just missing the wall and Wood drove back into the lead.
Over the next 13 laps Wood continued to keep Conn at bay until the final turn heading for the checkered. Wood lost control in the cushion and turned sideways allowing Conn to storm past for the win. Wood recovered in time to finish second. Williams settled for third followed by 11th starting Kyle Clark fourth and 10th starting Joe Wood,Jr. fifth.
A total of $4,000 was added to the purse by Jim Messmer, Ojar Peters, David Grace, Lynda Maxwell, Brad White, Jeff Taylor, Richard Windle, and Bud Lowe in honor of Peters, and Conn pocketed $1,600 for his victory.
