For the past two seasons Brendan Palmer has turned up to each meeting hoping to get a haircut and last Saturday night at Brisbane International Speedway (BIS) in Queensland via a cameo drive with the Jack Berry owned Polar Ice Racing team it resulted in a breakthrough Speedcar feature race victory and a haircut.
The deal with Palmer and his team was that when he won his maiden feature race in a Speedcar he’ll shave off his curly locks of hair. True to his word, Palmer directly after his feature race victory last Saturday night sat down and had his head shaved and it was without a doubt his most enjoyable haircut.
“I couldn’t have been happier to get this haircut as it had been a long time coming,” Palmer explained. “Over the past two seasons I have had a lot of pressure to get that breakthrough win, mainly from myself. I’ve been on the podium a number of times but I have just never been on the top step until now.”
Palmer, who has been sidelined since the opening round of the Speedcar Super Series at BIS due to a blown engine, got the late call up to drive the spare Polar Ice Racing team QLD # 92 Esslinger powered Stealth from car owner Jack Berry.
Due to being a late nomination, Palmer was forced to start from the rear of both his heat races and he managed to work his way forward and finish with a second place and a win respectively. Those two performances earned him the honour of being the second highest point scorer heading into the feature race.
In the feature race Palmer charged to the front from the outset and built up a commanding lead. Unfortunately the feature race was cut short by six laps due to rain and this awarded Palmer the win.
After a quick downpour the rain cleared and some track preparation, BIS promoter John Kelly offered the Speedcars another 15 lap feature race and the starting positions were decided by the finishing positions from the earlier 15 lap feature race.
“It was great that John [Kelly] offered us another feature race and it was certainly something I wasn’t going to pass up,” Palmer said. “I haven’t done many laps this season and to get another 15 laps was invaluable and the best thing about it is that I managed to take another win. It took an eternity to win one feature race but to win two in the one night was something very special.”
Palmer wanted to thank a number of people for making his maiden feature race become a reality.
“First of all, car owner Jack Berry who made me the offer to drive one of his cars and it was a wonderful opportunity that ended with two feature race wins,” he said. “My crew chief ‘Murph’ and the rest of my crew have been a huge help and it was great to finally to get a taste of feature race success together and also my loyal major sponsor Super Geek for all their ongoing loyalty and support.”
The plan for Palmer is to return to his regular ride, QLD # 41 Ed Pink Ford powered Breka, for the fourth round of the SSS at Maryborough Speedway in Queensland on January 1 and 2.
Palmer would like to thank the following supporters in the 09/10 season: SuperGeek – Chris, Tony and the girls www.supergeek.com.au , Naylor Painters, Wreck or Mend Panels, Michael Naylor for all his efforts, Ripper Lube Service, Kador Engineering, Showpiece Signs and Designs, Tim Clark for all his endless time and advice and also Dan Occhipinti, Mark Holt, Jamie Williams, Crew Chief Paul ‘Murf’ Murphy, Mum, Dad and Dave Palmer.
