Grand Annual Classic Decider Ends Prematurely for Lines

By Daniel Powell

A flat right rear tyre aboard the VIC # 45 H.A. Young Plumbing / Camden Neon Signs supported J&J of Steve Lines’ brought his 2010 Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic campaign to a crashing end at Premier Speedway (Warrnambool, VIC) over the Australia Day long weekend.

After qualifying strongly for the Grand Annual Classic deciding feature race in sixth spot; the current and three times South Australian Title holder was running inside the Top 10 up until a flat right rear tyre due to running over debris left on the track from another competitor sent him into a large rollover between turns one and two at just past three quarter race distance.

“Anytime that you crash it definitely hurts, but when you do it during an event as big and prestigious as the Grand Annual Classic and also when you’re running so strongly, it makes it even more disappointing,” expressed Lines, who had finished the preliminary feature race the night before in 10th place. “We kept our nose clean all weekend, as we had our eyes on firstly qualifying for the feature race and then running somewhere inside the Top 10 and we were on target to achieve that goal up until the crash.”

Leading up to the Grand Annual Classic Lines finished the Presidents Cup (Avalon Raceway, VIC) and Kings Challenge (Borderline Speedway, SA) feature races in 11th and ninth place respectively after he started towards the rear of the field.

Last Tuesday night Lines finished the 12th round of the World Series Sprintcars (WSS) Championship at Premier Speedway in 14th place after he had qualified into the feature race field by virtue of winning the B-main. Unfortunately qualifying 14th in time trials and then finishing second and then eighth in his two heat races was not enough for Lines to book himself a direct transfer into the feature race line up.

The annual Australian Nationals at Speedway City (Adelaide, SA) is to be fought out this Saturday night (January 30) and Lines has his sights on posting a strong result.
