MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing drivers Bobby Santos, Derek Hagar and Justin Carver are looking to bring home the Copper this weekend at the 4th Annual Rosemont Copper “Copper on Dirt” at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.
“Hopefully we can start off where we left off last season,” said Derek Hagar, winner of the 2009 USAC Silver Crown “Copper on Dirt” Hard Charger award.
Last year the driver of the No. 91 Hagar/ Conrad/ RE Technologies Dyno Tech FK Rod Ends car finished 5th at Manzanita Speedway. Hagar believes the tighter confines of the 3.8-mile dirt track will suit him just fine.
“USA Raceway sounds like the type of racetrack I like. Hopefully we will have the momentum of last year to carry into this race.”
The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team won the 2007 “Copper on Dirt” with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. piloting the No. 199. The following year, Stenhouse finished third. In 2009, Jesse Hockett won the opening night’s race. The next night Hockett was leading with a few laps to go when he was passed by eventual USAC Silver Crown Champion Bud Kaeding. Jesse Hockett finished second. This year Bobby Santos will drive the No. 199 Carl Edwards/ RE Technologies Roush/Yates Redline Ford.
“I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Chris Santucci and Carl Edwards.” said Santos. “I’m looking forward to hopefully starting off the year right so we will be able to run with them all year if things go well. I am really excited for the opportunity that they are giving me.”
Bobby Santos and the Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team won the final PRA Big Car Series race at Orlando Speedworld in 2006.
.
“I have never raced Tucson before. I have had success with the Silver Crown cars on pavement and Chris and the guys have had success with their dirt Silver Crown cars. I think with their experience, we can continue the success we had together in the past.”
Hagar and Santos will be joined by Memphis area hot shoe Justin Carver. Carver is set to pilot the No. 991 Memphis Fence/ RE Technologies machine. This weekend’s race will mark his third start in a Silver Crown car.
“Last season in my second race, Eldora, was a big confidence booster. After we spun out on the second lap, we were able to come back up through the field for a respectable finish,” said Carver. “My crew chief, Dennis LaCava, did a great job on my car at Eldora and he will be my crew chief this weekend so I am looking forward to it.”
Justin Carver grew up racing on the 1.4-mile dirt oval of Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. He says the shorter track of USA Raceway will remind him of his home track.
“This weekend I am more in my element,” smiled Carver. “I would like to walk out of there with a top ten. As long as it is a good weekend and we don’t tear anything up I will be pretty happy.”
