Yet another Top 10 feature race result during last Saturday night’s latest round of the Parramatta City Raceway (PCR) Sprintcar Track Championship has enhanced James Thompson’s chances in the overall point standings battle.
While Thompson finished in a hard charging seventh place, where he had passed 15 cars in the process, after he had to started from position 22 in the field via his B-main transfer, current PCR Track Championship leader Mitchell Dumesny had an unfortunate night and failed to advance out of the B-main and consequently this has narrowed the point standings battle between the pair to 23 points.
“It was a pretty brutal and unforgiving track for most of the night and it didn’t allow much passing especially during the heat races as you just couldn’t pass no matter who you were and it only really opened up towards the latter half of the feature race,” Thompson expressed, who after finishing second and 10th in his heat races failed to advance directly into the feature race line-up. “I had to go through the B-main and in the feature race I just did my best to stay out of trouble and bring home a strong finish. Towards the end of the feature race the car really came on quite strong and although I ended up seventh I wasn’t too far off the drivers that finished ahead of me.”
Now with only 23 points between himself and Dumesny in the PCR Track Championship, Thompson’s goal for the remainder of the season is to just bank more Top 10 finishes in order to help his point standings chase.
“With Mitchell [Dumesny] failing to make the feature race last Saturday night it has really tightened up the points battle and it’s now up to me to see what I can do with this opportunity,” commented NSW # 22 Hills Motorcycle supported Maxim driver. “There are only four rounds remaining of the PCR Track Championship and the goal is to just drive as hard as I can and finish up as high in the Top 10 of the feature races as possible and see where that gets me. I’d also dearly love to crack it for my maiden PCR feature race win too before the season’s end. I feel that I’m capable of doing that as I’ve been close on a few occasions so far this season and proven that I’ve been one of the most consistently fast drivers too.”
Thompson returns to PCR this Saturday night (February 27) to do battle in the 15th round of the PCR Track Championship.
Current PCR Track Championship Point Standings (after 14 of 18 completed rounds):
1 Mitchell Dumesny – 3254 points
2 James Thompson – 3231
3 Marty Perovich – 3230
4 Glen Saville – 3166
5 Grant Tunks – 3126
