After seven events in the season-long chase for Championship honours, ABC Auto Gear Racing team driver Pete Thorley has regained the 2009/10 Qld Speedway Spares Series (QSSS) points lead with a podium finish in the most recent Round of the Series at Brisbane International Speedway.
Leading into last Saturday night’s event at Archerfield Pete lay second in the Series, a mere two points behind leader Peter Lack and needing a solid result to not only have the chance to possibly advance his position on the table but to also just consolidate his standing as the Series edges closer to the final Rounds. With last start winner Richard Morgan drawing a double points marble for the second Round in a row, good results against arguably one of the toughest fields of the Series to date became even more of a necessity
They say confidence breeds results so when Pete stopped the clocks at a respectable 11.896s for the 1/4 mile journey to set Fast Time in qualifying, the team knew they were already part of the way towards reaching their goals for their night. Pete backed that qualifying effort up with a fifth and third placing in his Heat races to qualify as one of the top six drivers for the Dash, finishing third in the six lapper for an inside second row start in the Feature.
“Just setting some goals and achieving them as much as we can, that’s all we’ve been trying to do each week.” explained Steve Thorley, Pete’s brother and Crew Chief on the #51 Tyrepower/Action Metal Recyclers Eagle Sprintcar.
“The double points draw was a bonus for us on Saturday night, especially with Pete finishing third in the Feature as it has really helped us in the points chase. There’s still five Rounds to go so it’s far from over but if we can remain consistent and keep chipping away each week then hopefully we’ll still be up there somewhere in the end. We’ll see how it all pans out over the next couple of months I suppose.” .
With the races over and the Speedway lights finally dimmed at the end of the night, Pete left the raceway holding onto a twenty-six point lead over Morgan with Lack dropping back to third in the standings but still well in contention. Pete’s result also moved him to second in Club Championship points, just two markers behind leader Allan Woods with nine Club races remaining.
Pete’s results of late have been fairly satisfying for the team, with Saturday night’s finish his third podium result from the past three events and his seventh from sixteen starts this season. His Fast Time award was also his second of the Series so far and he has failed to qualify for only three A-Mains this season against all-comers, be it QSSS events, Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars events, the International Sprintcar Series or local Club shows.
The ABC Auto Gear Racing schedule calls for a break this weekend with the team slated to contest the next two Rounds of the Qld Speedway Spares Series at Brisbane International Speedway on March 6 and 20 before the three night, Sprintcars Qld Tri-City Challenge over the four day Easter Break.
