Battle For Qld Speedway Spares Series Title Heats Up

From jak industries.media

The battle for the Qld Speedway Spares Series resumes this Saturday night at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway and while the points chase at this stage shows a widening break at the top for three contenders for the Title, the return to Archerfield of a few high profile drivers signals the race for the crown is really only just heating up.

Two double point Rounds in succession has helped Pete Thorley regain the Series lead from Peter Lack and also moved Richard Morgan well into contention for a maiden Series Title, but it’s the inclusion in this week’s nominations of Todd Wanless, Andrew Scheuerle and Cameron Gessner this week that may ultimately decide the Series outcome.

Wanless, Scheuerle and Gessner are all past Series winners but all three have missed multiple Rounds this season. Feature race wins will be their primary focus from here through to the winter break and earning themselves a good haul of points each night will ultimately move them up the ladder and give them a larger slice of the pool money on offer. Where they finish each Round though will have an effect on the points of the leading three, and given that one of Scheuerle’s Titles came at the expense of Morgan by just a handful of points, it’s clear to see how their nominations could impact the chase for the Series crown.

Last start winner David Muir can also not be discounted tomorrow night when he aims to be the first driver to win two Series Feature races this season, the youngster breaking through for his maiden Feature win at BIS on February 20 after wowing fans all season with his stand-on-the-gas and run the highline style of driving. Likewise, Round 4 winner Bryan Mann will be chasing a second Series Feature win of the season on his return to BIS after racing in Western Australia through much of February.

In all, thirty-five Sprintcar and twenty-one Midget drivers have nominated for tomorrow night’s open wheel double header at Archerfield, including three-time and reigning New Zealand Midget Champion Michael Pickens who will make his first appearance for Jack Berry Racing in the team’s new #92 Polar Ice Spike/Esslinger car. Second generation racer Brock Dean will do the double, having filed an entry for both the Sprintcar and Midget races tomorrow night.

Also on this week’s program at Archerfield are Compact Speedcars, Stock Cars and Track Championship races for Ford v Holden Sedans and Brisbane Sedans. General admission gates open from 4:00pm, early racing from approximately 4:45pm with the main program from 6:00pm.
