PLACERVILLE, CA – In the wake of a highly successful season opener last Saturday night, Handy Racing Promotions and Placerville Speedway is preparing for it’s second high profile event of the season this Saturday, March 27.
The firebreathing 410 cubic inch powered sprint cars are headed to town to open the 2010 racing season for the highly competitive Golden State Challenge King of California Sprint Car Series The Golden State Challenge is California’s premier series for 410 cubic inch powered winged sprint cars. The annual series consists of 25 events taking place at 14 different tracks in California and the Pacific Northwest.
The latest rendition of the King of California title will be worth more than $450,000 in overall winnings throughout the California portions of the series alone An additional $225,000 will be up for grabs in the road to the Dirt Cup Western Speedweek addition to the series in 2010. The high dollar campaign begins right here at Placerville this Saturday night for an all open wheel event that is sure to thrill many.
Saturday will mark the first of just three Golden State Challenge events in the year to come at Placerville Speedway with follow up events on June 5 and the series finale on August 21 when the champion is officially crowned at the quarter-mile track where it all starts this Saturday night.
In 2009 a total of 109 different drivers competed in the Golden State Challenge Series and earned championship points. In the end it was Tyler Walker of Los Angeles completing a record breaking season and earning his first Golden State Challenge Series Championship.
Walker won a record nine feature wins during the campaign. Driving for the Sacramento based SC Motorsports #24 team he finished the year with a 26 point advantage over former series champion Jonathan Allard of Chico. The season would mark the last year of competition for the Calfornia based team and Walker has since traveled on to compete with the sprint car racing population in the Pennsylvania sprint car population.
Allard is set to return here Saturday night at the track he always performes well at along with former series champion Brent Kaeding of Campbell who finished in third over all followed by Evan Suggs and Kyle Larson, the 2009 series Rookie of the Year. All of last season’s top drivers are expected to return to start the new season of the GSC as well as a few new faces to the series. Kenny Allen of Chico who was the Placerville Speedway Rookie of the Year and and Civil War Series Rookie of the year will be on hand to text his skill in the 410 ranks.
Elk Grove’s Bobby McMahan will in be in competition at the track that berthed his racing career back in 1982. McMahan will be one of several regional track champions on hand as he won the 2010 Silver Dollar Speedway track champion. Additional reigning champions that are expected to join McMahan include Alissa Geving of Penngrove, the Petaluma Speedway titist. Colby Wiesz of Colfax, who won the most recent Placerville Speedway track championship has not confirmed but is a possible entry along with Fremont’s Shane Golobic, the 2010 Calistoga Speedway track champion.
