(MARCH 31, 2010, RIVERSIDE, CA) Heartbreak was the story of the night for popular USAC/CRA Sprint Car star David Cardey last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. What looked like a possible win ended 15 laps early and Cardey was forced to watch the second half of the race from the pit area.
Things started out bright enough for the veteran racer when he qualified sixth in the 25-car field USAC/CRA field. Cardey started his heat race on the back row and by the time the ten-lapper was over, he had advanced to the point position and recorded his first heat win of 2010.
In front of a large, enthusiastic crowd, David was determined to put on a well-deserved show for the fans and give them their monies worth. For the first 15 laps he did just that. Starting on the inside of the second row, the slender racing star wasted no time and amazingly passed the two front row cars by the time the field exited turn two for the first time. He led the first lap, but dropped back to second on lap two.
David never fell farther back than second and at the beginning of lap seven he reclaimed the lead. For the next eight revolutions, he led a ferocious three-car dogfight and courageously fought off the challenges of fellow star drivers Mike Spencer and Danny Sheridan. However near the end of the 15th lap, while leading the 22-car field, a problem interrupted his march to the checkered flag. David’s bright red #59 Sprint Car abruptly slowed as he exited turn four. He safely steered the car to the inside of the track to get out of everybody’s way to avoid a crash. The quick change gears in the rear end had broken and he was forced to relinquish the lead and coasted silently to the pit area with a 16th place finish.
David’s 2010 racing schedule remains busy. As this piece went to press, it looked like he would be making another appearance at the Ventura Raceway with the VRA Sprint Cars this Saturday night, April 3rd. A week from Saturday on April 10th, David will be back at The PAS with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars.
As always, David Cardey would like to thank the valuable sponsors who keep him on the track in his racing endeavors.
