After three nights of racing in Maryborough, Brisbane and Toowoomba during the Easter long weekend, Todd Wanless had raced his way onto the second top step of the podium for the Qld Sprintcar Tri-City Shootout with just four points separating he and James McFadden for the overall points Title.
Driving the #2 Tyrepower/Action Metal Recyclers/Self Serve Auto Parts/Aljon J&J amongst a field of forty drivers each night, Todd went into the final night of the Shootout fourth in overall points and with some work to do to make up the thirty-one point deficit to leader and eventual Tri-City Champion James McFadden. Despite timing in outside of the top ten for the first time on the weekend, Todd clawed his way back in contention through his qualifying Heats to make the Dash and give himself a legitimate shot at the Title going into the final race of the Shootout.
“Yeah, I guess we still had a chance there in the end and it’s fair to say we never gave up but we finished just short, that’s racing I suppose. It probably worked out about right in the end as James (McFadden) did a great job, however it’s also good to know we were able to put together some decent results and that we gave ourselves the best chance we could to win this thing.” is how Todd summed up his Qld Sprintcar Tri-City Shootout weekend.
Those results included two Dash wins during the first two nights of racing and finishing second in the Dash on the final night to start all three Features on the front row. Todd led the first two A-Mains at Maryborough and in Brisbane but was out-jumped on the start in Toowoomba by Cameron Gessner who went on to win the race.
“Maryborough we probably should have won, no question about it, but what happened is in the past and we’ll leave it there and move on”, explained Todd in reference to an incident with the driver of a lapped car that ended his race while leading the event.
“In Brisbane we carried the front end in the air across the line and Adrian Maher from NSW got us by half a wheel for third and in Toowoomba I got above the cushion coming off of two and it cost us a couple of spots. You know the racing is really close when even the slightest of mistakes costs you like that.”
“I suppose we narrowed the gap to James in the points when he dropped out of the Feature on Sunday night but he probably only dropped as many points as what we did on Friday night so that evened things out a bit. Timing in eleventh on the final night is most likely where the four points difference comes in.”
“We had a lot of fun though and it was great to be back racing after a lean couple of months at the track. Pete (Thorley) will be back from his trip in a week or so and we’ll go back to running two cars at the next Round of the Qld Speedway Spares Series in Brisbane later this month.” he added.
