Consistency has been the key to Pete Thorley’s hold on the points lead in the 2009/10 Qld Speedway Spares Series this season, the ABC Auto Gear Racing team driver posting an impressive six top five finishes from the eight Rounds of the Series to date to lead the Championship chase by fifty-five points heading into tomorrow night’s Series event in Brisbane.
While Pete is yet to record that break-through Feature race win in the Series so far this season, he has stood on the podium five times including three consecutive third place finishes prior to Easter that helped him earn the top spot on the ladder. In an ironic twist, it was his ABC team mate Todd Wanless that brought that streak to an end last weekend at Brisbane International Speedway when he finished in third place, one position ahead of Pete.
With four Rounds still to go before the Series wraps up in early June, Pete and the ABC team know there is lots of racing left before a Series Champion can be crowned and given the nature of dirt track racing and the level of competition in Qld, it’s business as usual when the team roll into Archerfield this weekend.
“We need to just keep doing what we’ve been doing all season” explained Steve Thorley, Pete’s brother and Crew Chief on the #51 Tyrepower/Action Metal Recyclers Eagle Sprintcar. “If we do that, the points will look after themselves.”
“There’s still four Rounds to go and while it’s nice to have a bit of a break on the field, we saw what can easily happen last week and something like that could quickly drop us back in the points.”
What Steve was referring to is a three car incident during the opening laps of Pete’s first Heat race last week that saw him fail to finish that Heat and subsequently have to qualify for the Feature through the B-Main. A remarkable run through the field from thirteenth on the grid to fourth at the flag helped him earn enough points to extend his overall lead in the Series despite dropping the Heat.
Following tomorrow night’s Qld Speedway Spares event at Archerfield, the ABC Auto Gear Racing team will compete in the 2010 Qld Sprintcar Title over two nights of racing next Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1. Both Pete and Todd have previously won the State Championship, with the team’s most recent success in the event two years ago when Pete won the Title for the first time.
