VENTURA, CA – SEPTEMBER 28, 2010… After a week off, the powerful 360 Sprint Cars of the Ventura Racing Association are back in action this Saturday, October 2nd, at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway. The action packed card will also feature the VRA Senior Sprints, Pro Dwarf Cars, USAC Young Gun Midgets, Junior Midgets, and Mini Dwarfs. The Front Gates will open at 3:00pm with Racing to start at 5:30pm at “The Best Little Dirt Track In America.”
Ojai’s Troy Rutherford took another step towards clinching the series title by winning the non-stop 30-lap feature on September 18th. Piloting the #11 Trench Shoring / L&H Consulting entry, Rutherford won his thirteenth heat race of the year by scoring the Steve Watt Enterprises Heat Race #2 victory. To date, the former SCRA Sprint Car Rookie of the Year has five feature victories, seventeen top-10 finishes, and a 490 point advantage over Greg Taylor. Troy will be looking for another Ventura victory on Saturday.
Ventura’s Greg Taylor jumped into an unfamiliar car and finished second to Rutherford in the main event. Driving the #31V Fast Undercar / Lucas Oil Products car normally driven Victor Davis, Taylor won his sixth heat race of the year by claiming the Lucas Oil / Fast Undercar Heat Race #4. The 2007 champion has four feature victories and fifteen top-10 finishes in 2010 campaign. This Saturday, Greg will be working for another main event win to add to his career total.
Camarillo’s Josh Ford is third in the point standings and drove to a fourth place finish on September 18th. Piloting the #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machining entry, Ford was second in his heat race to Greg Taylor and recorded his fifteenth top-10 finish of the year. The March 20th feature winner has five heat race triumphs and one semi-main victory on the year. Look for the former USAC National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year to have a strong performance on Saturday.
Palmdale’s Rick Hendrix is fourth in the point chase. Driving the #15 Rick’s Gates Works / Simpson machine, Hendrix was second in his heat race to Brian Camarillo and finished ninth in the feature. The former USAC Western Sprint Car champion has one feature victory, five heat race wins, and eleven top-10 finishes on the season. This Saturday, Hendrix will have his sights set on his second 30-lap main event victory of the year.
Reseda’s Kevin Kierce sits fifth in the point standings. The 2-time defending champion and pilot of the Fast Undercar / Direct Tire entry has announced his immediate retirement. Kierce finished his 2010 campaign with one feature victory, five heat race wins, and eleven top-10 finishes.
Among the other top contenders expected to be in action are Camarillo’s Brian and Brent Camarillo, Steve Conrad of Quartz Hill, Rialto’s Don Gansen, Reseda’s Justin Kierce, Oak Park’s Cody and Dakota Kershaw, Buena Park’s Brody Roa, 2006 Champion “Hollywood” Luis Espinoza of Castaic, and many more.
