October 12, 2010 – Brian Brown and the FVP #21 team are looking forward to running the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas this weekend. The Lucas Oil ASCS National series two-night event will showcase a strong field, and the Grain Valley, Missouri driver goes in as one of the favorites. He will also run the 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas on Sunday. Last weekend’s trip to Wichita saw him lead until there were two laps to go, before a flat tire ended his run.
The show in Wichita last Saturday night was sanctioned by the NCRA. “The night started out well,” says Brian. “(Promoter) C. Ray Hall always does a good job of getting people out there and excited. There was a good field of cars.”
Brian would draw outside of row three for his heat race, but that would not stop him from a solid run. “We were able to drive up to second,” he says. “That gave us enough passing points to start outside the front row of the feature.”
Brian and crew chief, Chad Morgan, assessed the track conditions. “It was ice-slick with a big cushion,” says Brian. “Knowing that, we knew it would take rubber sooner or later. You also had to be in position to win, so we left our car somewhat neutral.”
The setup paid off early. “We were able to roll out there to a pretty good lead,” says Brian. “About halfway through, it took rubber around the bottom, and we got in line. There was a caution on lap 16, and at that point, my left rear was going flat.”
With nine laps to go, Brian could only milk it so far. “We were able to get seven more laps out of it, but it gave way with two laps to go in the race,” he says. “It was just unfortunate. We’ve been really fast everywhere since the Nationals, but we’ve had some things beyond our control happening that cost us a chance to win some races.”
Brian was not discouraged. “We’re going to keep trying, that’s for sure,” he says. “It’s a little easier going forward that you knew you had the fastest car at a lot of these races. It’s one of those deals. Jeremy Campbell did a good job.”
Brian is ready to get to Mesquite. “It’s the most excited I’ve been to go to Devil’s Bowl in awhile,” he says. “We’ve been really good with the ASCS National tour recently, and we’ve learned a lot at that track. We need to keep plugging away and pay attention to what the track is doing. Obviously, the draw plays a big part with ASCS.”
Despite the tough luck as of late, the FVP team feels they are hitting their stride. “We’re going in trying to win them all,” says Brian. “After Devil’s Bowl, C. Ray Hall is having another show in Wichita on Sunday, and we’ll try to redeem ourselves there. It’s too bad we’re winding down on the year. Usually, this time of year, you are ready to take a break, but we’re going as strong as ever. We still have some big shows left on the schedule and we feel good about that going in.”

Brian’s Q&A
Bobby Russell asks: What is the key to getting around Devil’s Bowl?
Brian answers: It’s definitely tricky. People think I should go good there because it’s a half-mile. It’s tough. Going down the backstretch is uphill. Three and four is wide and sweeping, but one and two comes to a point. I’ve seen guys like Gary Wright, Shane Stewart, Jason Johnson and Kevin Ramey get through one and two, and they get their car going good there. We’re getting better in those corners, and I believe that’s the key.
