Scotty Weir and Dave Darland closed out the 2010 Kokomo Speedway season in fine style by winning the Sprint and Midget portions of the Kokomo Klash Friday night.
Cars began rolling into the pits early afternoon and by 4:30 cars were overflowing out of all the seams. 35 sprint cars, 22 midgets, 39 thunder cars, around 40 600 mini-sprints and 20 TQ’s.
After hot laps and sprint car group qualifying, racing was set to begin. A great crowd was on hand and was dressed for a chilly autumn evening. First up were four sprint car heats with victories going to Justin Grant, Scotty Weir, Dave Darland and Shane Cottle. The top four finishers in each heat transferred to the feature and some terrific racing was seen in the prelims.
Midget heat racing was up next with wins going to Zach Daum, Jerry Coons Jr. and Mike Hess.
Two Sprint B mains were run with the top two cars going to the main. B#1 was captured by JJ Hughes and B#2 went to Bryan Clauson.
The 25 lap Sprint feature rolled out 20 cars with Justin Grant starting on the pole and he led the initial circuit but Shane Cottle found his way to the front after two. At the five lap mark it was Cottle, Weir, Grant, Windom, Darland and Thomas Meseraull.Even though the order was the same at ten laps the racing was fantastic with position changes every lap. Also on lap ten, AJ Hopkins flipped in turn two but was ok.
On the restart racing for the lead between Cottle and Weir saw the pair swapping the point several times and this continued until lap 20 when Chris Windom moved into the battle with the top three cars under a blanket.
Windom was on top at lap 23 and as the trio took the white flag Weir was third and in turn three he caught Windom and took the win by a whisker.
At the checkers it was Weir, Windom, Cottle, Darland and Hunter Schuenburg.
Twenty two midgets lined up for their feature with Bryan Clauson on the pole piloting the 7A car and Jerry Coons Jr. outside. As the green flew Coons had the lead after one. Coming out of turn three on the 2nd lap Clauson jumped the cushion and executed a wild series of snap rolls high into the fence. Clauson emerged from the car uninjured.
After the restart Coons was being pressured by Zach Daum and on lap seven Daum took the lead and was chased by Shane Cottle, Coons and Darland who was running the high side and moving to the front.
At the ten lap mark it was Daum, Cottle, Coons, Darland, Hagen, T-Mez and Matt Westfall. Darland moved into 2nd on 15 and then to the lead on lap 17. Darland began to widen his advantage for a few laps but Daum began to close in again however Darland was up to the challenge and took the win followed by Daum, Cottle, Hagen, Coons and Westfall.
Jason Goff won the TQ A over Oogie Goff, Kellen Conover, CJ Leary and Travis Welpott. While Ryan Langston won 600 A over Jordan Campbell.
