Brian Brown – Southwest Swing!

By Bill W

November 9, 2010 – Brian Brown Racing and the FVP #21 team head west this week with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series. The trip starts this weekend with two nights at the Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces. The action will then move on to two-night stops the following two weekends in Tucson, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Grain Valley, Missouri driver is confident after a good showing at the Short Track Nationals two weekends back in Little Rock, Arkansas. Unfortunately, he was caught up in a lap one tangle in the finale that derailed his chances at the win. “I feel we had a fast car, probably in the top two or three all weekend long,” says Brian. “We just didn’t get the results. I messed up on the qualifying night with the setup for the feature, and was taken out in uncontrollable circumstances on Saturday night. I thought we were in the hunt.”

Still he came out of the weekend second overall in heat and passing points amongst as strong a field as you’re going to see. “Confidence breeds confidence,” says the 2010 Knoxville Raceway track champion. “When you can go down there with 125 cars and run at the top it gives you a good feeling going into your next race.”

This will be Brian’s first appearance at Las Cruces’ 5/16 mile high-banked oval. “I haven’t heard too much, just a little here and there,” he says of the track. “I’ve heard it can get slick. I hear that (promoter) Royal Jones has a tiller available, and they’re going to try to make it slick in the heats, and then till it for the feature. It should be good racing.”

As if the series’ regulars weren’t enough, Brian will have to face some heavy hitters including some of the best of all-time and ASCS Southwest point contenders, Rick Ziehl and Calvin Landis. “I’m just excited to get down there,” he says. “Everywhere you go in the country, there is tough competition, and that includes the local cars. You have guys like Steve (Kinser), Sammy (Swindell) and Danny (Lasoski) that will be there too, along with the ASCS National guys. The guys on the FVP team are excited to get down there.”

The trip is made feasible by the additional weekends added to the tour in 2010. “It’s a great deal,” says Brian. “They’ve got us going out West, and they picked three different locations. It was tough last year to have just Tucson and going out there for a one-race deal. Now you can hit Las Cruces, Tucson and Vegas and that’s pretty cool.”

Of course, the Brian Brown Racing team has another car in the trailer on their journey. California’s Justyn Cox will be finishing the West Coast swing in a second Maxim. “We’re looking forward to having the two-car team at Vegas,” says Brian. “There is still sponsorship for the car Justyn is driving. Right now, it is 100% available.”

Brian reiterated how key each and every partner he has on the car is as he heads west. “Our partners make it all possible, led by FVP,” he says. “I can’t say it enough, but we really appreciate what every single one of them does for us.”

Brian’s Q&A

John Schmidt from St. Paul, MN asks: As the weather gets cooler, what are some of the things you need to do to maintain and get the car ready on race day? I’ve heard the cooler air is better on motors.

Brian answers: The cooler the air, and the thinner the air, the better the motors run. As a team, we have to make sure the engine is fueled properly. You don’t want to burn a piston. That’s the biggest thing. We also have some great block heaters from FSR that we hook up that can keep the engine up to about 200 degrees. That way you’re not running your motor on the cool side.
