ROSSBURG, OH (April 30) – After four previously thwarted attempts to complete a racing program at Eldora Sepedway, the spelling of ‘rain’ was replaced with ‘reign’ as Matt Westfall (Sprints), Rob Trent (Stock Cars) and Jerry Bowersock (Modifieds) ruled court over a stout 84 car field Saturday during the Curb Records sponsored contest.
Westfall’s win came in dramatic fashion, as he waited patiently to reel in early race leader Scotty Weir, and then used lapped traffic to set up his move five laps from the finish, to take the lead that he narrowly held at the finish.
Just after the green flag was dropped, a turn one melee found quick qualifier Justin Marvel catapulting through the air in a series of violent flips. Marvel escaped any injury in the incident that also collected Jason Holt and Brandon Whited.
When the action resumed, it was Weir, winner of the dash, setting high sail out in front, with Jonathan Hendrick and Robert Ballou in pursuit. The quick pace of the chase came to a halt on lap seven, as contact with the wall collected Dallas Hewitt and then both Hendrick and Ballou, who tumbled and found their nights ended as well.
Once back underway, it was clear sailing to the checkered flag. During this span, Weir maintained control, as Westfall analyzed his attack. Chris Windom and Cameron Gulick had plans of their own, as they moved in to the rear of Westfall to set up a wild four car chase to the finish.
With the five laps to go signal, Westfall kicked it into high gear and slid under Weir to take command. The shocked Weir re-collected his thoughts and with two laps to go, pulled back up alongside Westfall, but couldn’t get the job done; having to settle for second behind Westfall. Windom, Gulick and Justin Grant completed the top five.
For Trent, it was a night of the classic saying, ‘the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’. After a dominating victory in the Stock Car finale, to win over former champions Barney Craig and Shawn Phillippi, Trent was collected in a multi-car crash on the front stretch during the Modified main event and flipped upside down. After a few moments of collecting his breath, Trent crawled out from the mangled machine.
It was Jerry Bowersock taking home the Modified finale; his first at Eldora in several seasons. It wasn’t an easy win, though, as Jesse Bitterling was closing in quickly at the finish and looked to have the momentum, but just didn’t have the time to get the job done. Brian Post drove a smooth race to finish third, while Rob Williams and Cory Seeling crossed the line in fourth and fifth.
