KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, July 23, 2011 – Dusty Zomer raced to his third win of the season, and eighth in his career at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night in the 410 class. Russ Hall captured his second win of the season in the 360 class, while Carson McCarl picked up his third win of the season with the 305’s.

Zomer jumped out to the early lead from his front row starting spot. Robby Wolfgang ran second, but was overtaken by Brian Brown on lap five. On the next go-around, Dustin Selvage and Mike Houseman Jr. tangled bringing out the caution. Zomer led Brown, Wolfgang, Ian Madsen and Danny Lasoski back to green.

Brown shot around Zomer on the restart as the two battled for the top spot. On the eight lap, Zomer regained the lead for good. Bronson Maeschen was running tenth when he jumped the berm in turn two and brought about another caution. Kevin Swindell made a bold move from seventh to fourth after the restart.

On lap fifteen, tenth running Lynton Jeffrey blew a left rear tire. That set up an opportunity for Swindell, who shot around Lasoski for the third spot. A three car accident marred the final dash as Austin McCarl, Cap Henry and Maeschen suffered extensive damage with three laps to go.

Zomer was able to hold onto the win in Derek Ingalls #91. “I knew the car was getting worse up on the top,” he said in Victory Lane. “When Brown came around me, I tried the bottom and found something. From there on out, the car was great down there. I didn’t want to leave it. I can’t thank my team enough, and we’re clicking at the right time.”

Brown settled for second, ahead of Swindell, Davey Heskin, who grabbed fourth on the last lap, and Lasoski. Mark Dobmeier, quick-timer, Terry McCarl, Ian Madsen, Wolfgang and Rager Phillips rounded out the top ten.

Swindell, Maeschen and Zomer won heat races. A strange ending to the first heat occurred when Brown was leading and lost control coming for the checkers, collecting Dustin Selvage. They were scored third and fourth. Bob Weuve got upside down in his heat, but returned for the feature.

In the 360 main event, Lee Grosz shot out from his pole position to lead early. With five laps down, Chad Humston checked up behind a pair of cars and spun in turn three, bringing out the yellow flag. Grosz led Russ Hall, Casey Friedrichsen, Larry Ball Jr. and Gregg Bakker back to green flag racing.

Hall sized up Grosz and had the lead at the completion of the sixth lap. Friedrichsen moved into second shortly thereafter. Hall had no peer as he rode the cushion around the big half-mile in the Mike Waddell Racing #45c. Friedrichsen finished a career-best second ahead of Clint Garner who grabbed the spot late from Gregg Bakker.

“My Dad and Dirty Red worked their butts off this week to get the car right,” said Hall from Victory Lane. “I have to thank Mike Waddell. This is awesome. This track turned out great. The car worked excellent, top or bottom.”

Larry Ball Jr. finished fifth, and Grosz, Jon Agan, Nate Van Haaften, Jordan Boston and Billy Alley rounded out the top ten. Dennis Moore Jr. won the B main, while Humston, JD Johnson, Van Haaften and Ryan Anderson took heat races. Austin Alumbaugh, Bryan Gossel and RJ Johnson were involved in a nasty tangle in the third heat. Only Johnson returned, and there were no injuries.

Carson McCarl left little doubt of the outcome, as he led from start to finish from his starting spot outside row one. Despite a lap two caution for a Steve Palmer spin, the 16 year old driver was flawless in the T-MAC Motorsports #97. Mitchell Alexander chased him to the checkers ahead of Kevin Hetrick, Austin Johnson and Jamie Ball.

“It’s unbelievable,” said McCarl. “I came into the year not expecting to win a race, and we’ve won three out of the six. I have to thank Van Gorp Construction, Gary Dean and Aaron Berryhill for their help. The bottom in three and four was getting a lot better so I headed down there.”

Matt Stelzer ran sixth, and Bart Friedrichsen, Josh Jones, Chris Mallicoat and Matt Stephenson rounded out the top ten. Johnson and Alexander won the heats.

The Deery Brothers Late Model Series hits Knoxville on Tuesday night, July 26, while next Saturday, July 30, Candi’s Flowers Night will see the last preparation before the 21st Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals.
