STARKS EARNS FAST TIME, TOP FIVE AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

– ALGER, Wash. (Aug. 16) – With one roll of the specialized dice, Trey Starks determined his fate.

After recording fast time in qualifying at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., last Saturday – his first quick time of the season – Starks was called to the frontstretch during the Opening Ceremonies. He then rolled a crafted dice down the track. Whatever number – between zero and eight – that came up was the invert for the feature.

“I rolled a six,” the Puyallup, Wash., native said. “It mattered because the track was kinda one lane. The guy who started on the pole won it. I was one of the only guys who moved up, and that was just one position.”

Starks drove from fourth to third in his heat race, which didn’t matter because all of the competitors were locked into the feature. Because of his roll, Starks started the feature sixth.

With most of the drivers on the bottom, the 15-year-old tried to create a lane at the top of the track. Eventually he picked up one position and closed in on three drivers during the final laps.

“The second, third and fourth drivers were all right there at the start-finish line,” he said. “They were trying to run the bottom and I was pretty much the only legitimate guy running the top. I was probably two car lengths from fourth place at the line.”

Starks’ fifth-place finish was his sixth top five of the season and his second consecutive at Skagit Speedway, where he placed fifth the week before at the 360 Nationals.

“Given the track conditions, I’m pretty happy with it,” Starks said. “It sucks when you roll a bad invert because at Skagit it’s hard to come from a few rows back. Maybe this week we can qualify fast time again, roll a zero and win.”

He will race in the 410 class at Skagit Speedway again next Saturday.

Crew member Dallas Melby will be running Starks’ 360 car on Saturday as well.
