ANDERSON, Ind. (January 26, 2012) – Officials from United States Speed Association (USSA) and Anderson Speedway have announced that USSA will sanction the 12th Annual Glen Niebel Classic Sprint Car race to be held on Sunday April 29 at the lighting fast quarter-mile oval. The USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series will join the non-wing Sprint Cars for a full day of open wheel action.
The Sprint Car portion of the event will be conducted under the car rules utilized for the 64th Pay Less Little 500, including the Hoosier Tires used for the Little 500. The event is a tune-up for Pay Less Little 500 teams one month prior to the legendary short track event.
“We are grateful to Rick Dawson and Anderson Speedway for the opportunity to sanction the Glen Niebel Classic Sprint Car race,” said Don Kenyon, USSA’s President. “It gives us a chance to help fill the hole that has been left in pavement Sprint Car racing,” he explained.
The 100-lap USSA Sprint Car event celebrates the storied career of long-time car owner and chief mechanic Glen Niebel, who passed away in 1999. Niebel enjoyed tremendous success at the speedway with his V-6 engines.
Niebel’s potent No. 20 cars won a whopping six Pay Less Little 500’s with Bob Frey and Bentley Warren behind the wheel. Even more incredible is the fact that his cars also scored six runner-up finishes in the 500-lap race. Niebel cars also account for one Little 500 pole position and one tune-up win.
Some of the premier Sprint Car drivers have earned victory in the 11 previous Glen Niebel Classics. Nine-time Little 500 winner Eric Gordon scored the inaugural race victory with other checkered flags claimed by Levi Jones, Bobby East, 2009 Little 500 winner Dave Steele, Aaron Pierce, Dave Darland, Tracy Hines and most recently Bobby Santos.
The USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series will feature the Kenyon Car Midgets, full size midgets powered by Yamaha engines, traditionally featuring close racing and plenty of excitement from the green to checkered flags.
