SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Selinsgrove Speedway will open the 2012 season with a rare early afternoon show starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, featuring the 410 sprint cars and pro stocks. Track gates will open at 12 p.m.

The 410 sprint car drivers will compete in a 25-lap main event paying $4,000 to win and $300 to start out of a purse totaling more than $16,500. Heat races, with starting lineups being determined by luck-of-the-draw, and a B-main will be the qualifying format for the first open wheel event of the season at the historic Snyder County oval.

The March 11 race will mark the fifth earliest sprint car season opener since the speedway re-opened in 1963. Last year’s March 13 410 sprint car opener was the sixth earliest in track history and was won by Lance Dewease of Fayetteville. The 358 sprint cars became the weekly open wheel attraction at the speedway in 2001, and have opened the sprint car season six times since then.

The 410 sprint cars will also compete at Selinsgrove in the Keystone Cup/Ray Tilley Classic May 27, Jan Opperman Memorial PA Speedweek Finale July 8, and the Jim Nace Memorial National Open Sept. 15.

Last year’s other 410 sprint car races at the track were won by Greg Hodnett of York (Keystone Cup and PA Speedweek) and Pat Cannon of Etters (National Open).

The Salem RV Center/Byers Built Engines pro stocks will race in a 15-lap feature paying $400 to win. Defending champion AJ Hoffman of Richfield is expected to be in the field and will be seeking his third consecutive title this season in the weekly stock car division.
