Abbottstown, PA — (June 16, 2012) — “You gotta have your ‘game on’ if you want to race at this place.”
So said four-time defending track champ Brian Montieth after claiming both the $4,500 winner’s share and $100 hard charger bonus in the 25-lap Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn, Sr. Memorial 410 sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. The extra $1,300 in bonus money was provided by the Gohn family and friends as part of the 25th annual Gohn Memorial race.
Montieth started ninth and outdueled eight of the top names in sprint car racing to win his 30th career feature in the Pigeon Hills.
Brad McClelland started on the outside of the front row and led the first four laps before fifth-starting Fred Rahmer drove under the B&D Truck Hoist #6 exiting turn two of a fifth-lap restart.
The red flag waved on lap six for Cory Haas, who tipped onto his side after contact with Alan Krimes while the two raced for position in turn two. Ironically, Krimes was done for the night, but Haas went to the pits, replaced a flat tire, and came back through the field to finish 11th at the end.
After the sixth-lap restart, the race went non-stop the rest of the way, with Rahmer leading until Montieth pulled a slider to take the lead in turns three and four of lap 19. Montieth picked off one at-a-time the sprinters of Jim Siegel (to take fifth on lap eight), Aaron Ott (to take fourth on lap 11), Brad McClelland (to take third on lap 15), and Brent Marks (to take second on lap 16).
Three laps later, Montieth slid in front of Rahmer for the lead and crossed .78 seconds in front of Marks, who edged Rahmer coming to the line at the finish. Ott and tenth-starting Danny Dietrich completed the top five, with McClelland, Brian Leppo, Siegel, Adam Wilt, and Ryan Bohlke rounding out the top ten.
Heats for the 28 “410” Sprints on hand were won by Danny Dietrich, Derek Sell, and Leppo, with Tim Glatfelter winning the consolation.
Former 600cc micro-sprint driver Kody Lehman came from seventh starting spot to claim his first career win in the PASS 305 sprint car feature. Lehman, from Enola, advanced through the field to the runner-up spot by lap six. From there, he chased down Ryan Lynn, who took the lead from polesitter Tim Dietz on lap two.
The caution came out as Lehman appeared to be setting up for a pass on Lynn in turns three and four of lap 19, but the caution came out, forcing Lehman to settle for the restart. No matter. Lehman drove under Lynn on the restart, and pulled away to a 1.23-second win at the finish.
Lynn settled for second, with Mike Wagner II, 15th-starting Bill Ney, and Tyler Lebo completing the top five.
Logan Wagner, who started second, pulled up lame in turn two of the opening lap, ending his night.
Heats for the 28 PASS “305” Sprints on hand were won by Kyle Lloyd, George Riden, and Logan Wagner, with Freddy Rahmer winning the consolation.
Point leader Duane Watson lead the only lap that matters, the final lap, in the 20-lap thundercar feature. Watson came from his 10th starting position and drove methodically through the field to catch front row starter and race-long leader Wayne Dutterer on the backstretch of the final lap. His final margin of victory was .69 seconds, and it was his second win of the year and 35th of his career at Lincoln. It also continued his string of finishing in the top five in every Lincoln race this year.
Polesitter Jason Townsend completed his best-ever Lincoln run in third, with Mike Slaybaugh and 13th-starting Will Walls completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Jimmy Combs, Justin Mong, 15th-starting Todd Miller, Roy Warehime, Jr., and 18th-starting Danny Beard.
Heats for the 20 Thundercars were won by Dutterer and Slaybaugh.
The Race of Champions big block modifieds return to the Pigeon Hills for a special mid-week show this coming Wednesday night, June 20th. The “Second Annual Battle at Lincoln: North vs. South” will also include a 358/360/URC Challenge for the sprint cars in a show which begins at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
Next Saturday night, June 23rd, it will be KIDS NIGHT at Lincoln, featuring the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints & Thundercars.
Gates open at 5:00, with racing to get underway at 7:30 p.m. There’ll be a driver autograph session and games for the kids in the infield before the races. Prizes will be given away to kids throughout the show.
