Pair of Top-10’s Keep Smith and CL Motorsports Rolling in Midwest

From CL Motorsports

HOLMESVILLE, Ohio. – August 16, 2012 – Fresh off of a strong run in the 52nd Goodyear Knoxville Nationals, Stevie Smith and his #19 CL Motorsports/DDNi/CJB Motorsports/Spectro Oils KPC continued their success in the Midwest. A 6th place run at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska on Tuesday, August 14 opened up a four-race tour for the team in America’s heartland. A runner up finish the following night at Red River Valley Speedway in Fargo, N.D. added to the momentum for the Ohio based organization.

“We’re still getting very consistent results and that is absolutely key,” said Smith. “When we look at our finishes, it’s really good to see long streaks of great finishes because that’s what wins you championships. We’re not running for a season long title this year but 2013 is a whole different animal.”

The New Oxford, Pa. native timed in 12th quick as the #19 team took on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at Junction Motor Speedway. According to Smith, time trials set the tone for the evening.

“We got a little bit behind in time trials but we still made the dash,” said Smith, who has 34 top-10’s so far in 2012. “We still made the dash and ran decently but time trials continue to be the most important part of the night. Where you get slotted in at has a lot to do with the amount of success you’ll have at the track. We started 7th and finished 6th at Junction Motor Speedway and we were happy with that. There wasn’t a great deal of passing that night but the track was very fast.”

A seven and a half hour trip north took the #19 car to Red River Valley Speedway in Fargo, N.D. the following night as the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions were in action at the three-eighths mile oval. Rain and heavy winds before the end of time trials forced series and track officials to restart the evening’s program. Smith timed in 8th overall and started the 30 lap feature in the same position.

“The surface at Red River Valley Speedway was a lot like Chico (Silver Dollar Speedway) in that it was very wet and tacky,” said Smith. “I think the rain ended up helping the surface a lot because the wind was fierce all day long and it kept that moisture locked in for a long time. Our car going until about ten laps in. We didn’t seem to take off well but after a few laps, we were one of the fastest cars on the track. I don’t think we had anything for Jac Haudenschild because he was in his own zip code. We did have some great battles with David Gravel and Paul McMahan and finished second. The track was pretty rough but I have a great Bulterbuilt seat in my car so it didn’t rattle me around.”

The event at Red River Valley Speedway marked the halfway point for the CL Motorsports Midwest tour. The remaining tracks on the schedule are venues that Smith has never raced at.

“River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks and Nodak Speedway in Minot will present some challenges,” said Smith, referring to the two remaining North Dakota tracks. “I’ve never raced at either one but I’ve competed on so many that it shouldn’t be too hard to adjust. River Cities is a tight bull ring and Nodak is a little bit larger. Both are high banked and fast. I keep hearing that they are great places to put on a show for the fans and that’s important. We also have these races to pick up our first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win and we’d really like to accomplish that goal soon.”
