The last time Rico Abreu was at the Calistoga Speedway it was over the Memorial Day Weekend, and he was capturing his first career win in only his second start at the scenic ½ mile, fast forward four months and again Abreu was standing in victory lane this time aboard his Keith Kunz Motorsports midget.
Following a nightmarish Saturday night that saw Abreu get upside down in the dash after setting quick time and then an issue prevented them from running the feature, Abreu kicked Sunday night off in style as he timed in third quickest.
Lining up for the feature in the fifth spot, Abreu wasted no time powering his TRD/Abreu Vineyards/Bullet to the front as he grabbed the lead on the third circuit.
Once out in front, the St. Helena, CA driver was in a different area code as he simply left the field, and built up a very comfortable lead, similar to his sprint car win back in May.
On the 20th lap, his progress was halted as the caution flag waved. On the ensuing restart, Abreu wasn’t able to sneak away as second running Shane Golobic hung with him and the two California youngsters entertained the crowd as they sliced and diced for the lead spot.
At the stripe it was Abreu edging out Golobic for the win, picking up his second win at the historic track and becoming the first person to win in a midget and a winged sprint car at the venue.
“It’s the best feeling to win at your home track, let alone to be able to do it both in the winged car and in the midget,” Abreu said after his win. “We had a tough break on Saturday night getting upside down in the dash, but Keith and Pete worked hard to get it back together only to end up having battery problems in the feature. I have an awesome team, and we were fast every time we hit the track.”
Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt,, Outlaw Wings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.
