From Bill W.
October 2, 2012 – A third and fourth place finish were not the results Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team were looking for last weekend, but that is the hand they were dealt. Still, it was a solid showing in the stout field that contested the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver is weighing his upcoming racing options this week.
Things started well with a heat race win from outside row one. “It’s obviously a race that means a lot to our team,” says Brian. “Going in, we felt we had a good shot to win. We started Friday on a good note. We drew a good number and we were able to win the heat. The track was a little different than normal. They had a lot of rain leading up to Friday. It was still pretty narrow and heavy.”
Brian would draw the pole for Friday’s preliminary feature. “We felt good going into it,” he says. “We were kind of on the fence about what we should do to the car. We just kind of chose to leave it alone. That bit us a little bit. We were too free entering the corner, and that messed us up.”
Brian would lead in the early going. “We led a few laps and then Brady (Bacon) got by,” he says. “Brady was really the class of the field that night. I got a little complacent and let Tony (Bruce Jr.) by with a few laps to go. I was able to get back up on the wheel, finish third, and lock ourselves into Saturday.”
Again the draw proved fortunate, as the pole position was drawn for Saturday’s finale. “It was a good weekend for the draw for sure,” says Brian. “We started beside Jason (Johnson) and we knew it would be crucial to get a good start. The track was on the verge of taking rubber any second. I didn’t feel I did a good enough job getting the start that I needed. I did what I thought I needed to do. I just gave him plenty of room and maybe that was a little bit of a mistake.”
The chase was on. “We were able to settle into second, and when the traffic came we were able to get back to him,” says Brian of his pursuit. “We had a little altercation with a lapped car, got over his right rear and lost second with a few laps to go. At that point, if we couldn’t win it, second, third or fourth didn’t matter.”
Brian would checker fourth. “We just didn’t get it done,” he admits. “We had the opportunity all weekend and didn’t capitalize on it. It was pretty unfortunate, but it is what it is. We have a lot of big races ahead. We can’t dwell on this, we have to look forward.”
The team is contemplating a week off. “We’re not sure on our plans yet,” says Brian. “There are a lot of big races coming up. We may just take the weekend off and make sure we are ready for Granite City and Pevely in a couple weeks. Keep tuned in on our Facebook and Twitter accounts to see where we may be.”

Brian’s Q&A
Jerry Coughenaur asks: Do you run the same stagger at a track throughout the night?
Brian answers: That’s a good question. We usually start and end with about the same stagger. There are times when the track is a lot wetter early in the night, and then it dries out. We do carry smaller left rears and bigger right rears in case conditions change.+

Brown’s Bits
On May 14, 2004, Brian drove for Tim and Gina Doogs for the first time. Even though he was still employed in the Casey’s General Stores #6 on the World of Outlaws tour, he found time to come back and win in Sedalia for the Doogs. He topped Steve Gennetten, Bobby Hawks, Tommy Mikels and Randy Martin and the rest of the Winged Outlaw Warriors field that night.
