From Bill W
November 28, 2012 – Brady Bacon headed into the 2012 season with high expectations. In his first full year as an owner/driver, he was able to win twelve races including the prestigious “Hut Hundred” for the midgets at Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana. In addition to two wins in a midget, the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver won in both win and non-wing, and 410 and 360 competition. The young driver impressed many, and he will announce his 2013 plans next week.
Brady again followed the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series this season, finishing third in a tough point race. On the way, he racked up wins at Jetmore, Kansas, a two-race sweep in Eagle, Nebraska, and tallies at Murfreesboro, Arkansas, Hanford, California and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. “To move up and get seven ASCS National wins, when we only had one last year, and four the year before that…there was a big improvement in that area,” he says. “We had a fast car every time we hit the track. We had some bad luck and gremlins here and there that put us back, but we were a contender to win every night.”
The talented shoe teamed with the Wilke-Pak midget team for a win at Cowtown Speedway in Texas in March and the “Hut Hundred” at Haubstadt in June. “We had the opportunity to run in a lot of different cars, and win in a lot of them,” says Brady. “We had some significant wins, including the Hut Hundred, which was probably the most significant win for me prestige-wise.”
Other highlights included winning both the non-wing and wing features in Wheatland, Missouri at a race named after one of Brady’s heroes. “Obviously, winning in both classes of the prelim at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial was definitely a special night,” says Brady. “We won two races for Jack Hockett (the other at Valley Speedway) this year. That was really fun racing for Jack, and getting those wins.”
Brady teamed with the Hoffman Racing #69 team on a handful of occasions in USAC competition. He won with the team at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. He also picked up his first career win at Kokomo (IN) Speedway in the PPM Titanium Products #99. “It was good to get a USAC win and also another open win at Kokomo,” he says. “We had a busy year, but we were successful in everything we did.”
The win at Jetmore, Kansas came at the Steve King Memorial, which Brady conquered for the second year in a row. “That place seems to be good to us every year,” he says. “We were definitely glad to win that one again, and it was a tough-fought battle with Jeff Swindell this year. I really like that track.”
Brady almost came up with what could have been the biggest win of his career at Haubstadt when the World of Outlaws came calling. He dropped out after leading late in the race. “It was definitely encouraging how well we ran in the 410 with the Outlaws,” he says. “We were a contender. We should have won at Haubstadt, but we had a mechanical problem. I’m looking forward to more of that 410 stuff next year.”
Perhaps the biggest achievement came in his ownership of Brady Bacon Racing. “This was the first full year owning my own team,” he says. “That was an accomplishment in itself. Financial challenges were the biggest, especially with the economy the way it is. We had a good year in that we won some races when we needed to.”
Stay tuned for some big announcements next week!
