From Bill W
March 4, 2013 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team head to the Dirt Track in Las Vegas Wednesday and Thursday night to compete with the World of Outlaws. They are coming off fifth and seventh place finishes with the Lucas Oil ASCS National series at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona last weekend. Over two weeks the points they accumulated lead the ASCS series.
It was another solid weekend for you at Cocopah Speedway.
First, I want to give a big thank you to Greg Burgess, and everyone at Cocopah Speedway. They did a heck of a job in the promotion of the event. They got the fans involved, had a car show the day before…the press conference they did…everything was top notch. They had great crowds and they deserve a pat on the back.
You led your heat for a while before your hero got by!
We drew a good number (the pole) and got a good start in the heat. We felt like we were decent, not great. Then here comes Tony (Stewart), and he went by us. Instead of being in the redraw, we were starting tenth (in the feature).
It was your first trip to Yuma. What did you think of it?
When I first looked at it, I really thought it would fit our style. It did, but with the sand, we never got the balance of the car I needed all weekend. It got fast around the top on Friday, and everyone kind of got in line. I had to slide guys when I got to them.
Still, you drove from tenth to fifth.
It was unfortunate in that in ASCS shows you need to make the top four to lock yourself in to the final. We didn’t do our job early in the night to put ourselves in position to do that. Other than that, I thought it was a decent night and gave us something to work with going towards Saturday.
It sounds like your heat was eventful on Saturday. You started sixth and finished fourth.
We drew a really tough heat. I felt I got a really good start, and I went from sixth to the lead. After two laps, we had a yellow and they penalized me two spots for jumping the start. It’s their job to police that, and ours to push the issue. On the restart, I went to the bottom trying to make something happen and (Johnny) Herrera got by us.
The finish put you in the B.
The track was really quicker on Saturday. We just didn’t have the balance of the car the way I needed it…at least to challenge for a win. We were able to win the B and start 17th in the A.
You were able to charge to seventh.
We kind of forged along and did what we had to do. It became difficult to pass. We took the checkered, and the top seven cars were on the same straightaway. I was just kind of glad to get out of there and get on to Vegas after that.
How do you look at your two weekends with the ASCS in Arizona?
We’re leading the points, though we’re not running for points this year. I think that shows how well the team did over the two weekends. That’s an accomplishment and that’s pretty cool.
Up next, you have two nights in Las Vegas with the Outlaws, and then you go back to Tucson with them on Saturday.
We’re ready to get the Charlie Garrett 410 in the car and see how we do with the Outlaws. We’re looking forward to Vegas. We did pretty well there last year. We’re also looking forward to Tucson where we were able to win last week. We’re working our hardest to get our first Outlaw win.
It’s a lot of work to be able to run the two classes (360 and 410) on this kind of trip isn’t it?
Chad Morgan and Travis Marsch are working really hard out here on the road. We want to do well for Casey’s General Stores, FVP, Searsboro Telephone Company and all our great partners.
