After what can only be described as a difficult run so far in the 2012–13 season, Jeremy Cross returned to victory lane over the weekend by taking out the 12th round of the Sydney Speedway Sprintcar Track Championship.
In what his fourth career Sprintcar feature race win, Cross hit the lead in the early stages of Saturday night’s feature race and was never headed. He survived numerous restarts and never put a foot wrong and in the end was rewarded with a comfortable win.
Cross, who had started from position four in the feature race after recording the 10th fastest lap in time trials and then going on to win his heat race, said that the key to his breakthrough feature race victory of the season was going back to basics.
“We’ve had quite a tough run this season and had been trying a few things with our setups, but they weren’t working – it seemed the more we tried, the more we struggled,” explained the driver of the NSW # 39 Tyreright supported Maxim. “Heading into Saturday night’s race meeting, we decided to go back to basics by using a familiar setup, and it worked. The car was great all night and so too was the track, so we couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
The plan for the remainder of the season is to chase race meetings up and down the east coast of the country, which is all going to be depending on the weather gods. However, Cross feels that with another feature race win under his belt, he can finish the season on a strong note.
“Anytime you can get a win, it does wonders for the confidence, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” the Western NSW based racer enthused. “Sprintcar racing is all about having confidence as a driver, in your team and with the equipment under you, and as we’ve shown that when it all comes together we can be a front runner.”
This Friday and Saturday night (March 15 and 16), Cross will return to Sydney Speedway to contest the annual $50,000 Scott Darley Challenge. After taking the following weekend off, Cross plans to head down to Victoria to contest the Easter Trail: Avalon Raceway (Vic) on March 29, Borderline Speedway (SA) on March 30 and Premier Speedway (Vic) on March 31.
Cross would like to thank his dad Frank, along with crew chief Spike for their support.
