Rico Abreu returned to the Thunderbowl in Tulare, CA on Saturday night, and ran 20-laps on the ragged edge of disaster on his way to his first win of the season as he was in action with the Rebel Cup series.
“I absolutely love Tulare (CA), and tonight’s track was crazy, but we had a great car and it was great to win after the start to the season we have had,” Abreu said.
With 20 cars in the pit area, Abreu timed in second fastest to Carson Macedo, putting his Abreu Vineyards/ButlerBuilt/FK Rod Ends backed machine in the second heat.
Lining up in the second row, Abreu quickly went to the top-shelf, and put his machine in the lead, as he picked up the heat race, victory, and made the feature event inversion, which was a zero pill.
Starting on the front row for what was a scheduled 30-lap contest, Abreu quickly grabbed the lead on the initial start, as he flirted with disaster, running a very rough high line.
Unfortunately red flags marred the event, with several cars turning over, and fence repairs being necessary, but that didn’t seem to phase the Rutherford, CA driver.
The stoppages shortened the race to 20-laps, but Abreu was simply awesome on this night, as he led all 20-laps and picked up the very popular win.
“It was a little hairy sometimes with the rough track, but I hit my marks, and made sure not to hook any ruts, and the end result was worth it,” he said.
Friday night, Abreu and his Abreu Vineyards Racing team were in action with the World of Outlaws at the Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA.
On what was a very slick racetrack, Abreu timed in 15th quick, but with 27 cars he was outside of the heat race inversion.
A sixth place heat finish, did put him in the feature, and he gridded the field in the 15th position.
As the trick continued to slick off through the night, Abreu was good early, as he worked his way into the top-10.
With the race clicking off laps, the track continued to deteriorate, and became tricky in spots.
Running in 10th, Abreu slipped off of the track, and lost several spots, and ended up finishing in the 20th spot.
“We had a top-10 car, I just made a mistake late in the race that killed us,” he said. “Overall it was a great weekend. Anytime you can pick up a win, it is huge for the team.”
Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, ButlerBuilt, FK Rod Ends, Schoenfeld, Keith Kunz Motorsports, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, and Factory Kahne Shocks for their support.
