Spending the weekend in Texas, Matt Covingotn had a strong two nights, however a spin in lapped traffic dampened his weekend results, but a fourth on Friday in Boyd, Texas highlighted it.
Taking advantage of a great pill draw on Saturday night, Covington flexed his muscle early, as he picked up the heat race win aboard his T&L Foundry/Triple X/Winters backed entry and earned a spot in the night’s feature event.
Starting in the fifth spot, Covington went to work on the very racy track, against what was a very stout field of cars with the national series being rained out.
Racing wheel to wheel with Johnny Herrera and Channin Tankersly, Covington ran in the fourth spot all feature long.
Pressuring Herrera for third, Covington ran out of time, and settled for fourth at the stripe.
“It was a stout field of cars at Boyd, and we were right in the thick of things with them,” Covington said. “The track was awesome, and our car was really strong all night.”
Saturday night Covington was in action in Abilene, Texas, again with a heavy mix of National tour cars.
A second place finish in his heat, put him in the redraw, and the one pill put his Brodix/C.G. Martin Company/Factor One Racing machine on the front row of the 25-lap feature event alongside Seth Bergman.
Covington looked to have the car to beat, as he jumped out to a monster lead over Bergman, on the tight ¼ mile track.
By the eighth circuit, Covington found himself marred in heavy lapped traffic, and Bergman was able to pull up to his back bumped.
Working through lapped traffic, bad luck struck on the 13th lap, when a car lost the handle in front of him.
Taking avasive action, Covington made contact with Bergman, and too went spinning, giving up his race long lead.
Restarting from the tail, Covington was able to rebound to a 12th place finish.
“We were really good and Abilene, and it is a bummer what went down,” he said. “Unfortunately I tried dodging a spinning car, and got into Bergman, and I went spinning. It was a racing deal, and it is part of the sport.”
