ALGER, Wash. (May 5, 2013) – A new month brought a new opportunity for Trey Starks.
Facing no chance of rain for the first time this season, Starks opened the month of May with double duty at Skagit Speedway on Saturday. He led all 25 laps to claim his first feature victory of the season in his first 360-ci event and he finished fourth in the 410-ci race.
“It’s nice that the first actual race we got to run we won,” he said after his fourth career win and second at Skagit.
After a handful of rainouts and a parts failure in the opening laps of his only race this season, Starks entered Saturday at the 3/10-mile track on a mission. He qualified fourth quick and finished second in his heat race, which put him on the pole of the feature.
Starks fell to second in the opening turn, but rallied to regain the lead entering turn three.
“I cut under him coming off (turn) two and finished him in (turns) three and four,” Starks said. “The only trouble was going to be lapped traffic and it was no trouble.”
A handful of cautions bunched the field up several times, including one with approximately five laps remaining, but Starks hit his marks consistently and ended up lapping all but the top six drivers.
He then climbed into his 410 sprint car for the 25-lap feature in that class, which he also started on the pole after qualifying fourth and placing fourth in his heat race.
“We had some power steering trouble,” he said. “It was tough battling. I was holding on as long as I could. I was at the car’s will. I was trying to run a smooth line, trying to salvage what I could.”
Starks dropped to second on the opening lap. He fell to third place on Lap 10 and to fourth on Lap 11. Starks faded to fifth place for two laps before reclaiming the fourth position for the final five laps.
“It was a really good night to pick up a win and two top fives,” he said. “Like I said last week, maybe we’ll get some good karma after having the bad luck with the rain and crash to start the season.”
Starks will return to Skagit Speedway on Saturday to compete in the first of the four-race Summer Thunder Series presented by SpeedMart.
