FREMONT, Ohio – WOW!

That’s what the fans who witnessed the non-stop 30-lap 410 sprint feature at Fremont Speedway left saying Saturday night. Cap Henry, Chris Andrews and Caleb Griffith put on a phenomenal show on a blustery night, slicing and dicing through lapped traffic while trading slide jobs. In the end, Henry edged Andrews for his first career 410 sprint victory at “The Track That Action Built” on Baumann Auto Group Night. The race featured numerous lead changes all around the third-mile oval on a points night for the $10,000-to-win Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series.

“I hope Chris isn’t mad cause we made contact a couple times there battling for the lead and then when we got into lapped traffic I had to make some moves. That was one of the most intense races I’ve ever run,” said Henry beside his K&N Filters/FK Rod Ends/Champion Oil/Kistler Engines backed #54.

“I lost my brakes there the last five laps and I thought ‘okay Chris, if you give me a slider I’m not lifting…it’s either win it or crash.’ But, he raced me clean and hard. This one is for John Wisbon…it would have been his birthday today and it’s special for my crew chief A.J. (Havens). I have to thank A.J. and Barman (Andrew). They have busted their tails and while I get all the glory I’m standing here because of their hard work,” continued Henry in the Engine Pro Victory Lane. “I used to hate coming to this place because we never ran well. It’s starting to grow on me…I can’t wait for the All Star shows here in a couple of weeks.”

The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature also went non-stop, with Bradner, Ohio’s Nate Dussel holding off John Ivy to score his second win in a row and the third of the season at Fremont. Dussel also has two wins at Attica Raceway Park in 2013. It also came on a points night for the JLH General Contractor 305 FAST Championship Series.

“Wow…this came on a FAST night and I always have such crappy luck on a FAST night…this is awesome,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Fabrication/Kylynn Manufacturing/Conrad Transport/Gressman Powersports/Design Graphics Group #1. “If you would have heard our pit area before the feature…all you heard was air wrenches and people slamming stuff. They changed so much in the last five minutes….I’m so fortunate to have so many crew guys. This thing is easy to drive right now. To win five out of the first seven point races…it doesn’t get any better than this.”

“I want to thank the fans. We had a lone rain delay (an hour) and you stuck around. This place is the most bad ass place to race because the fans are awesome,” concluded Dussel in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

In another good feature, John Ivy, Dustin Keegan and Dan Roepke Jr. waged a tremendous battle over the 20 laps of the AAA Ohio Auto Club Dirt Truck feature before Ivy would take the win. It was the second truck feature win of the season for Ivy and the 39th of his career at Fremont. Ivy is now one win away from tying hall-of-famer Harold McGilton for eighth on the track’s all-time win list.

“The truck was easy to drive, I just had to not screw up. I wish we could have gotten the 305 win too, but we’ll take this,” said Ivy, who earned an additional $150 from the Baumann Auto Group. “I want to thank Level Performance, Diversified Machine and Welding, Sonny’s Machine Shop and Vision Quest for their help. Hopefully this is just the start of a lot of wins this year.”

In the Surfin’ Sweepstakes Sports Compact, defending track champion Brandon Myers passed Evan Patynko on a restart with two laps to go to score his third career win at Fremont.

“Track was slick tonight…I like it dry. I have to thank my grandpa especially. He helps me out with the car. If it wasn’t for him I’d probably not be racing,” said Myers beside his BG Radiator/Loren Sautter/R&R Repair backed #32.

For the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints, the first four rows of the feature were determined by a King of the Hill match race, pitting the top eight qualifiers who made it into the main event through their heats in two car, two-lap battles. Andrews would come out victorious in the King of the Hill competition and he chose the outside front row starting spot with Henry being placed on the pole.

When the green flew, Henry got the advantage with Andrews right on his rear bumper while Fricker’s Frickin’ Fast Qualifier Paige Polyak moving in third with Caleb Griffith, D.J. Foos and Cole Duncan in tow. Henry, Andrews and Polyak waged a great battle up front with Griffith joining the fray on lap six. Andrews would drive to the outside of Henry to hold the lead on lap 8, but Henry drove back into the lead a lap later.

Henry and Andrews would race side by side the rest of the feature. As the lead duo drove into lapped traffic on lap 11, Griffith closed. Andrews used traffic to take the lead on lap 16, but Henry used a lapped car as a pick to retake the top spot a lap later. Griffith would also use the lapped machine to grab second on lap 18 and when Henry jumped the cushion in turn four on lap 19, Griffith dove to his inside as they raced side by side for the lead with Andrews looking for a way around both.

Griffith would lead lap 21, but Henry was able to use lapped cars to his advantage to retake the lead on lap 22, bringing Andrews into second. With five laps to go, Henry and Andrews had pulled away slightly from Griffith. Behind the lead trio, Foos was locked in a good battle with 9th place starter Dale Blaney and 12th place starter Tim Shaffer.

With four laps to go, Henry and Andrews were in heavy lapped traffic as they sliced around cars and nearly colliding lap after lap. Andrews drove to Henry’s inside and outside lap after lap trying to pass but couldn’t complete the move. Henry, who is third in the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions point standings, would hold off a last lap attempt by Andrews to score his second career win at Fremont. It was the second week in a row for Henry to garner a win as he took the checkers at Lernerville Speedway last Friday.

The 305 sprints also held a King of the Hill match race competition, pitting the fastest 8 qualifiers in two car, two lap battles. It was Jordan Ryan who was the “King of the Hill,” and he chose to start on the pole for the feature with Ivy to his outside. When the green flew, Ivy quickly grabbed the lead over Ryan, Jimmy Colvin, Dussel, Jason Keckler and Paul Weaver. Dussel would take third on lap three and drove around Ryan for second on lap eight.

Dussel would use a lapped car as a pick and he drove around Ivy for the lead on lap 12. Dussel was able to maneuver his car around the lapped machines while Ivy had to stick to the bottom. Ryan would run comfortably in third with 11th starter Bobby Clark on the move. Dussel would drive to the checkers for his 10th career Fremont win while Ivy, Ryan, Clark, and Colvin rounding out the top five.

Dana Frey and Dustin Keegan would bring the field to the green in the 20-lap dirt truck main. It would take four attempt before a lap could be completed which was followed by another caution. On the restart it was Keegan leading Frey, Ivy, Roepke, Art Ball, Cory Ward, Keith Sorg and Matt Foos. Ivy would take second on lap two with Roepke grabbing third on lap five before the caution flew again.

After a side-by-side race for the lead, Ivy would take the top spot on lap seven with Keegan, Roepke, Frey, Ward and Sorg giving chase. The caution would fly again on lap eight. On the restart Ivy was able to pull away slightly as Keegan had his hands full with Roepke and Ward with Steve Sabo moving into the top five. Ivy would drive into lapped traffic with three laps to go, but Keegan couldn’t make up ground and actually got trapped behind a back-marker, losing second to Roepke.

Roepke would close on Ivy, but it was too late as Ivy drove to the win. Roepke, Keegan, Sorg and Sabo would round out the top five.

In the 12-lap sports compacts feature, Chevy Farmer and McKenzie Biddle brought the field to the green with Farmer quickly pulling away as his brother Kyle moved into second with Andrew Schroeder taking third, followed by Taylor Holland and Evan Patynko. Chevy Farmer built a huge lead as Schroeder moved into second, bringing Patynko to third. With four laps to go, Chevy Farmer would break a front axle, ending his night and handing the lead to Patynko with Schroeder giving chase and Myers moving into third. Schroeder’s motor would expire on lap 10, bringing out the caution. On the restart, Myers would drive under Patynko for the lead and would drive to the win, Patynko, Tyler Sherman, Amanda Shammo (coming back after an early race spin) and Kyle Farmer would round out the top five.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 18 on Roots Poultry Night. It will be a Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series event for the 410 sprints. The 305 sprints, dirt trucks and sports compacts will be in action on the Students Race Into Summer event. Fremont Speedway handed out tickets to all students in Sandusky County Schools.
