May 14, 2013 – Brady Bacon has a busy weekend in store that will include three events in three different machines. Friday night, he’ll tackle the USAC sprint car Larry Rice Classic at Indiana’s Bloomington Speedway in the Hoffman Racing #69. He’ll be piloting the PPM Titanium #99 midget at Macon Speedway with POWRi on Saturday and he’ll be campaigning the Wilke-Pak midget at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin on Sunday. Last weekend, he finished tenth in the USAC show at Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana.
Brady had plans to run his own car with the wing last Friday night, but that changed. “We were planning on running Attica (OH) with the FAST series on Friday night,” he says. “We ran into so much rain that we stopped on the way. They canceled it, and we turned around. On the way home, I convinced myself to go to Gas City.”
With a quick front axle change and removal of the wings, Brady was ready for the I-69 Speedway. “It didn’t go well at all,” he admits. “The car was good and everything. They draw for heats, and we got shuffled back in a tough heat. I think we had eight cars in the heat and seven of them could have won the feature. It was just one of those deals.”
That sent Brady to the B. “We were in a transfer spot,” he says. “We actually passed Ted Hines for the spot and he just spun me out in the next corner. That’s the second time we’ve had that happen this year…getting spun out by someone we passed. We were over halfway, so we wouldn’t have been able to get to a transfer spot.”
The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma pilot was back in the Hoffman #69 Saturday at Haubstadt with USAC. He would register the tenth quick time of the night. “I just didn’t get a good lap in,” says Brady. “Neither lap was clean, which was the case for a lot of people. The track was tricky for Haubstadt.”
After finishing third in his heat, Brady lined up outside row one for the feature. “We were running third,” he says of the early going. “I had some issues with the car. It was tight sometimes and free sometimes. I just went down in turns one and two and spun out on the bottom.”
Brady found his groove again and started picking back through the field…only he had to do it twice. “We went to the back and got back up to tenth or eleventh,” he says. “Two guys ended up piling up in front of me. We went to the back again and wound up tenth.”
Brady knows that finding a good rhythm with the Hoffman team is essential in his pursuit of a USAC championship. “For going to the tail twice, it wasn’t bad,” he says. “The spin was on me. We really should have had a podium finish. It’s been hard to really get a groove going right now with all the weather problems. We’ve got some good solid weeks coming up with a lot of races, so I’m excited about that.”
The team’s focus this weekend will be on the Larry Rice Classic at Bloomington. Brady will add those two midget dates as well. “We’ll also run the PPM Titanium #99 at a POWRi race at Macon Speedway in Illinois on Saturday,” he says. “Then we’ll run the Wilke-Pak car at Sun Prairie (Wisconsin) on Sunday night.”
