May 30, 2013 – Brady Bacon put the wing on for four straight nights last weekend. The Brady Bacon Racing #99 competed at Lima in Ohio with the NRA 360’s on Friday, with the All Stars at Fremont Speedway in Ohio on Saturday and Sunday, and with the World of Outlaws at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana on Monday. This weekend, he’ll be running with the Outlaws at both Attica Raceway Park in Ohio and I-96 Speedway near Lake Odessa, Michigan.
Despite a malfunction, Brady ran second in his heat at Lima. “Something hit the spark plug and cracked the porcelain,” he says. “We were only running on seven cylinders. We were still able to finish second.”
The finish put Brady inside row five for the feature. He would advance to sixth at the checkers. “It was fast up around the top,” he says. “There wasn’t really any racetrack anywhere else. It was kind of hard to get a run on someone to slide them. The finish wasn’t bad. The car was good and we could have run up front if we started there.”
The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver moved on to Fremont Saturday and posted seventh quick in the stout field. “We were really good in the heat race (fifth to third),” says Brady. “We were good in the Dash too (fourth to second), but once the track has been slowing down, we’ve been struggling.”
The track did slick off as the feature wore on. Brady was able to run out front early on. “We did lead the first ten laps or so,” he says. “We had like three cautions in a row. I don’t know if our tire cooled off or what, but after that, we were headed backwards! The track can change that much. We went from being the best car on the track to an eighth place finish.”
The track gave away quickly for the All Stars on the second night at Fremont. “Where you qualified, was pretty much where you went out,” says Brady. “I think the top six qualifiers were the first six to qualify. I think we were one of the first cars to go to the bottom, and we made a decent lap (tenth quick). Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make the Dash.”
Brady lined up eighth for the feature after a second place heat run. “It was extremely slick,” he says of the track. “That’s where we’re struggling right now. We tried some different things and we were better Sunday…just not good enough. We ended up in the back and slid off the track, but we ended up coming back and passing several cars (ending 13th).”
The high-banked Lawrenceburg Speedway was next on Memorial Day with the WoO. “Monday was kind of the same situation as Fremont,” says Brady. “We qualified pretty well (seventh), and ran well in the heat (third to second) to make it to the Dash. I got crossed up off the bottom in the Dash, and got the left front clipped. It knocked the front end down. It bent the radius rod, but we got it fixed for the feature.”
Starting tenth, Brady would checker 18th. “We just went the wrong way with the racecar,” he says. “The bottom was o.k., but it was just dry. I think we tightened up the car too much.”
Qualifying efforts were encouraging heading into the two WoO dates this weekend. “We fixed some things with the motor for qualifying, so we’re feeling good there going into Attica and I-96,” says Brady. “We need to figure out the tires a bit. These other guys have more races on them.”
