Peoria, AZ — (June 10, 2013) — Winged Sprint Cars will take to the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval for the first time this year with Saturday night’s Third Annual Father’s Day Classic featuring the Hose Advantage ASCS Southwest Region at the track near Phoenix.
Along with the winged Sprint Car ranks will be a full slate of IMCA Modifieds, Loan Mart Challenge Cup non-wing Sprint Cars, Micro Sprints, Dwarf Cars and Renegades.
Saturday’s racing action, which goes green at 7:00 p.m., will be preceded by an open practice session on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The ASCS Southwest Region made three stops at CSP in 2012 with current points leader and defending champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM, reaching victory lane last April. Ziehl currently holds a 124-point lead in Southwest points over Billy Chester III, who topped last year’s Father’s Day Classic at CSP.
While Chester topped last year’s winged Sprint Car portion of the Father’s Day Classic, Ricky Thornton, Jr., enjoyed top honors in the IMCA Modified ranks last June. Thornton, Jr., who topped the most recent Modified outing at CSP on May 11, enters Saturday’s action with a three-point lead in the title chase over Anthony Madrid with Jay Foster, Jason Noll and Guy Stewart filling out the current top five.
Noll is the only driver to repeat in the Modified ranks thus far in 2013 with triumphs on March 1 and April 6.
With four triumphs in six events, Josh Shipley leads the way in for the Loan Mart Challenge Cup Sprint Car ranks with an 11-point edge over Johnny Shelton, Jr. Jacob Hawkins is third, with Matt Lundy in fourth. Lundy has claimed the pair of wins that Shipley couldn’t corral, including the most recent event on May 26.
Dustin Cormany tops the Micro Sprint win charts with four victories although Colton Hardy topped the most recent feature on May 26, Brian Stehr snared the lone previous Dwarf Car feature win on May 11 and John Romero has topped both previous Renegade outings.
