From Marysville Raceway Park
Marysville, CA — (June 13, 2013) — The MRP Wingless Sprint Cars will once again perform their patented 100 MPH sideways-slide at Marysville Raceway Park Saturday night. With no wings or airfoils of any type allowed, the Wingless Warriors showcase a high speed balancing act unmatched in dirt track racing. For the most part it is left to the driver’s bravery and skill to get to the checkered flag. Point leader “Rowdy” McClenon from Anderson has made the long tow each week and has jumped to the top of the standings with top 2 finishes in every event including 3 victories in a row.
Marysville’s Jeremy Hawes has motored into 2nd spot in the standings though he hasn’t won yet. Hawes who is starting to pick up the nickname “The Hammer” has been close, but, thus far, no cigar. Hawes is dramatic in his style of driving, drives with only one hand and is a real crowd favorite with his hammer down, never quit attitude. When Hawes is on the track, you know it.
Sacramento’s Tim Sherman Jr. is 3rd in the title hunt with a victory on opening night. Another rocket fast chauffeur is Marysville’s Josh Vieira. Vieira was involved in a vicious crash 3 races ago but word has it he’ll make Saturday’s show. Tony Godwin, who took a big tumble in turn 3 a couple of weeks ago has thrown away that car and bought another one for this week’s event.
All eyes are on the outstanding rookies in this year’s Wingless Warrior class. Cameron Bartlett was 3rd on opening night and has led the rookie points ever since. 4-time MRP Mini Stock champion and perennial crowd favorite Misty Castleberry will be back looking to improve her season in the sprinters. Johnny Burns is the other rookie racer wanting the trophy. Burns has improved with every showing after graduating from the Pro 4 class this season.
The McClenon-Hawes dice for the title has been a thrilling one to watch as both drivers are keeping an eye on the prize. Hawes’ outrageous style simply has not been enough as McClenon’s well maintained hot rod, seemingly hasn’t missed a beat all season.
The fender bending MRP Super Stocks will also compete and Cort Dozier is looking more and more like the driver to beat. Early season point leader James Castleberry can’t buy a break and Dozier has finished on top each time Castleberry couldn’t make the call for the feature. That has happened twice in a row!
Ray Trimble has won and has been very quick all year. His black 37 has been menacing all the front runners this season and if Trimble can keep that car under him, he could be the champ. Trimble remains just a dozen points out of 1st place in the standings. Sean Hulsey, the Magenheimer brothers, Mike Walko and veteran Willie Horn will all be in the mix.
Watch out for Phillip Shelby if he figures out how to last 20 laps. He has won nearly every race he has finished. Therein lies the problem. Shelby has had mechanical issues in practice, heat races and twice has been sidelined while leading feature events. With Shelby out of the championship hunt, he’ll be out to win every week
The BCRA Midget Lites will make their 2nd appearance of the year as the traveling group continues their 2013 campaign. The Pro 4 Sprints are also on tap in this program. It will be interesting to see if anyone has anything for Misty Castleberry in this class. She’s pretty much had them covered this year as she once again will race in 2 classes.
It will be a rip-roarin’ good time at MRP on Saturday night. If you haven’t experienced the Wingless Warriors riding the right rear on MRP’s hooked up surface, it is time to do so. It is a breath taking ride on the wild side.
The pit gate opens at 3pm. The grandstands open at 5. Hot laps for all classes begin at 6pm with racing.
