Fishers, IN — (June 26, 2013) — Eight years ago editor Doug Auld took me up on an idea. I had long wondered if people would be interested in a fictional series centered on sprint car racing; Doug had the gumption to challenge me to find out.
Jimmy Wilson, a championship USAC sprint racer from the “Thunder and Lightning” era of the 1970s, was born. He was immediately joined by a host of friends and rivals, and together they will reach their 100th episode with the August issue of the magazine.
Frankly, nobody is more surprised than I am. 100 episodes? I figured we’d maybe do 12 and the idea would quickly die away. But people took a liking to Jimmy and his friends, and we immediately heard from readers who told of anxiously awaiting the arrival of their next issue so they could, “Keep up with Jimmy.”
As we reach this milestone, I want to offer a word of thanks. First, thanks to Doug for having the courage to try something so unique. And thanks to our readers for sticking with us and offering such positive feedback.
100 episodes down…next we’ll work on 101.
