Alger, WA — (September 16, 2013) — Trey Starks wrapped up his season in the Northwest with a bang. Literally.
“In hot laps we had a nice, little oil fire,” he said. “We had some oil come out the breather and it got on the header and it caught on fire.”
Things continued to heat up Saturday at Skagit Speedway for the championship night. The cars competed in a six-lap scramble, which was lined up based on points going into the night. Starks advanced from fifth to fourth place to start on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“In the main we went from fourth to second and ran with (Travis) Jacobson until the motor started laying down,” he said. “We knew it was tired, but we knew it be its last race of the year. It started running worse and worse throughout the race. On a restart on Lap 11 I tried it on the bottom and got it to kinda stick and stayed on the bottom, but that was about all there was.”
After noticing the engine dropped a cylinder halfway through the 25-lap feature, Starks maintained his runner-up performance for most the event until a late restart.
“With a restart with four laps to go we didn’t take off that well and with about two to go we got hit with a pretty big slider,” he said. “We rode third the rest of the race and that was really all we had.”
Starks’ third-place result marked his 18th top-five finish of the season and will send him on the road with some momentum. Starks is scheduled to compete with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series on Friday at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, for the 4 Crown Nationals and on Saturday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., for the Commonwealth Clash.
The hauler left Washington on Sunday and Starks is scheduled to fly out Thursday afternoon.
“I’ve had a lot of success the couple of times I’ve raced at Eldora,” he said. “I’m excited to see Lernerville for the first time.”
Starks claimed a heat race and earned a pair of top 20s last season at Eldora Speedway in World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series action.
