For a little over four years, Antelope, CA’s Camron Mendes piloted a winged 360 Sprint Car all over California, but unfortunate changes in his family forced his family operation to fold, and after two years of sitting on the sidelines, Mendes is hoping to return to the sport in 2014.
“For nine years I raced a combination of Outlaw Karts, and then Sprint Cars, and then to just be a spectator the last two years has been rough,” Mendes said. “I understand that opportunities are hard to come by, but I’m willing to do what ever it takes to get some sponsors behind me, and hopefully put something together with a car owner.”
Beginning his racing career at the age of 10, Mendes competed in the Outlaw Karts for five years, until his family purchased Sprint Car equipment when he was 15, and he moved into the 360ci class, competing at various tracks throughout California.
For four-years Mendes wheeled the very familiar Black, White, and Orange family owned No. 29 machine, and racked up four career A feature wins, a long with numerous quick-time awards against some very stiff competition.
As Mendes continued to improve, and gain valuable track, and seat time, some changes in his family occurred, which resulted in his racing equipment being sold, and his racing career being put on hold.
In 2010, Mendes was able to compete sparingly for Burt Lathrop, but unfortunately, the deal was short lived, and Mendes’ racing career has been on hold ever since.
“Racing is such a passion of mine, I would love another opportunity to get behind the wheel and compete,” he added. “I understand it is not a cheap sport, but you can never get anywhere you want to get without putting forth an effort.”
