BEAUMONT, Texas (March 18, 2014) – Things are beginning to click for Josh Baughman and his Jason Johnson Racing team.
Baughman put together the team’s best performance of the short season last Friday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park during the ASCS Gulf South Region season opener.
“We started off great,” he said. “We drew good and ended up winning our heat race.”
Baughman started on the pole of his eight-lap heat race and he led the distance.
“They called the first start back,” he said. “We had to restart and we led the whole race. We were up on the cushion, running around the top. The track still had a lot of moisture in it. We stayed up on the cushion and flat footed it around the track.”
That earned Baughman enough points to advance to the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 4 in the redraw, which lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“Other than a couple of driver errors, I felt like we had a top-three car for sure,” he said. “Wayne (Priddy) and Patrick (Silva) had the car great.”
Baughman maintained the fourth position for most of the first 20 laps.
“It was pretty much around the bottom,” he said. “In traffic one time I bobbed when I should have weaved and Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) got under me going into turn one. Then we ran fifth for a couple of laps and had a caution at the end. Christopher Bell got me going into turn one on the last lap.”
Baughman ended with a sixth-place result, which was the team’s first top 10 of the season.
“As a team, I felt like we had a really good night,” he said. “That builds a lot of confidence going into this weekend. I feel like we’re going to have a really good weekend.”
Baughman is slated to compete on Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
