Former USAC Silver Crown Champion Ken Schrader and NASCAR star Kenny Wallace will compete in the UMP Modifieds Sunday as part of the “Sumar Classic” activities at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Both will also participate in an autograph session prior to the racing action.
Schrader’s lone USAC victory at Terre Haute came in a Late Model race in 1986 but he is no stranger to the half-mile oval, having competed in Silver Crown, Sprints, Midgets, Late Models and Modifieds, and he’s among favorites to win Sunday’s UMP feature.
Wallace, a quarter century NASCAR vet, should offer Schrader a challenge in Sunday’s modified race. A noted television color commentator, he doesn’t lack in terms of fan appeal.
Sunday’s UMP race accompanies the “Sumar Classic” 100-lap USAC Silver Crown Championship race, the opening race of the 2014 season.
Schrader, USAC’s 1982 Silver Crown Champion, scored his only dirt-track Silver Crown win at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio the next year. He followed with five pavement wins, three at Phoenix and two at Indianapolis Raceway Park between 1986 and 1990.
Practice is slated to begin at 4 pm Sunday, with the first feature event at 7.
